  • Burnt sensor?

I was wondering if anyone knew what this was that got burnt up on my driver's side collector. It is a little black rectangle plastic thing with a red light on it, it's near the starter with wires coming from it . When I did my plugs I left it to where it got a 1/3 of the way burnt.

Does anybody know what this is? Is it something aftermarket?

Something is wrong with your description. You say driver's side collector and then starter. They are on opposite sides of the engine. There is nothing stock with a light on it.

Sounds like an O2 "sim". But the location is confusing, as Rob already pointed out.

I meant passenger side I am sorry. I 'll have to get a pic from under the car. It used to blink when the car was running but now it doesn't.

Is the O2 on there sim because I have no cats. Is it something I need. I know the exhaust is pretty rich.

The rear O2 sensor harness is on the passenger side by the starter. It's square, as opposed to the front sensor harness which is flat.

I agree with the others...sounds like an O2 SIM. If you have removed the cats, the rear O2's would not be necessary as their purpose is to verify the function of your cats.

If the SIM has failed, and the ECM has not been re-flashed to ignore the rear O2 sensors, you will set a trouble code.

The front O2s are mandatory...as they tell the ECM how to adjust the mixture.

An O2 sim would typically be installed in the electrical connector near the downstream O2 location, rear of the cat. If someone installed one in the upstream location, then he had a fueling issue and didn't know how to resolve it other than to dummy out the O2 sensor. However, I've never seen an O2 sim that blinks.
