  • 96 T/A no spark

My buddy has a 96 T/A and it isn't getting spark. About 2 months ago the car died and wouldnt start. We replaced the distributor cap and rotor and the car started but ran rough. we left it idling in the drive way and after about 2 minutes it died and wouldnt even turn over again, we suspected the vats so we bought the resistors today and took the bottom part of the dash off and the bypass was already done to it. we pulled it off, and put ours on it; and it turned over. but still no fire. what do you guys think

My guess...Optispark. I tried replacing the cap and rotor too, with no luck. Apparently, I tweaked the optical wheel just enough that it warped and was rubbing the sensor ever so slightly. After I disassembled the unit, I could see a slight rub mark on the disc.

I bought a new unit from TPI parts in Florida. They have units manufactured to their specs (in Canada) and run about $200.

        So far...no issues.

We don't have a fuel pressure gauge, but i can smell fuel fumes coming out of the exhaust after we try to start it a few times. So I am assuming it is. It is my buddies car and he works in the oil fields, 1 week on 1 week off, and he is at work this week. We are going to try the steps to determine the cause for no spark this weekend.

Scan it. That will tell you if you are having problems with the Opti optical sensor. Or something like the IC Module.

We tried scanning it, no codes. He doesn't seem to want to get it running right now, but I do thank everyone for their input. He has a 94 Camaro V-6 that he has had for awhile now and has put alot of money into, tranny, tires, stereo, etc., so he is driving it for right now. I would MUCH rather drive the T/A over the camaro myself!

Ironically, my neighbor (a GM mechanic) recently replaced an Optispark on a 94 Firebird. About a week later, the guy was back complaining about issues. It turns out he was thowing code 16, which is directly related to the Opti.

He called me up, asking for advice. I knew right away what happened - trying to save the customer some cash, he used a "no name" Opti replacement. Like most of them, it's hit or miss.

I told him to spend the money and get a Delco (or at least well known Opti. replacement like from thepartsladi or TPI -parts). Sure enough, problem resolved. The customer has not had a problem since (for at least the last two weeks).

I used his shop on my recent rebuild. I rebuilt the Opti, also trying to save a few bucks. Sure enough - no joy. I tweaked the metal wheel and it was dragging on the sensor. I replaced the Opti. with a new one and voila! no more issues.
