  • What u-joint for 1LE DS and stock rear

I've been searching for a couple of days now, and can't seem to get a simple answer.

I'm thinking the rear u-joint (pinion side) is starting to show some wear, so rather than just replace one, I''m most likely going to replace both. I've searched for the proper u-joint p/n, but can't find any definitive answers.

I know the 1LE requires a different u-joint than the steel DS. However, the answers I found, "the rear one needs a combo unit," "the front one is standard", "just get the one GM also uses" are about as vague as can be.

Does anyone have a p/n for the u-joint on the tranny side and a p/n for the u-joint on the pinion yoke side (using the 1LE DS)? This is driving me nuts...

Also, are u-joint girdles necessary, or just fluff? I noticed on Summit that several manufacturers make girdles/straps, but can't tell if they're overkill for my power (350 hp, 375 ft/lbs). I'm just looking for a reliable set-up.

Oh yeah...I've had a driveline (I think...not sure if it's a tire yet) vibe at 70+ and want to eliminate the source. I found one tire out of balance, so I rebalanced but haven't tested it out at speed yet. I noticed the u-joint had some resistance and was popping when I had it off, so I want to remedy over the winter.

Why would you say its showing wear? Are they making noise? Did you look at the bearing?

When the shaft was out, I could feel the joint binding and getting hung up when I moved it around. It just didn't feel smooth like I thought it would. Might be fine, but if the tire re-balance doesn't work, I want to have a game plan of what to look for next.

This vibration has been bugging me for a while.

Are you getting the imfamous Freeway vibration? I dont really think the U-Joints being bad will cause that. Its either tires, or the actual driveshaft. Could also be your Flywheel/Clutch assembly (if your M6).

That is really strange. I am looking at the parts lists and it shows the "prop shaft" 93-95 with 3.4, 95-02 with 3.8, and 93-97 with LT1 but no 98-02 with LS1. It also does not show the 1LE "prop shaft" either. So it only shows the U joint for the LT1. Might I also say what a goofy design for the V6 driveshaft. Who dreamed that up.

BTW yes the U joint can cause vibrations. I had a problem one time with a vibration in the butt. I put 2 U joints from an auto parts place in it trying to fix it. I took the drive shaft to Doraville drive lines and they said nothing was wrong but to put in a Spicer U-joint in it. I did and the vibration went away. Not all U-joints are created equal.

That's exactly why I'm having a hard time. Trying to find the part numbers for a 96 LT1 with a 1LE DS is ptic.

Are you sure that the 1LE uses a different U-joint than the LT1 or LS1?

FYI the V6 and V8 uses the same U-joint. GM#12471502

                  Well...honestly...no.

Here's a copy of one post I found on CZ28.com from several years ago:

                  *******************************
THESE ARE FOR THE 1LE DRIVESHAFT, NOT SURE ABOUT THEM WORKING WITH THE LS1 ALUMINUM DRIVESHAFT AND I KNOW THEY WILL NOT WORK WITH THE STEEL DRIVESHAFTS!

THE 1LE USES A 1310 SERIES ON THE DS SIDE, AND THE STOCK PINION YOKE IS A 3R.

                  STOCK REAR TO 1LE:
                  +NEAPCO/PDQ 3-3130
                  +BRUTE FORCE 3-3130BF
                  +ROCKFORD K3022
                  +SPICER 5-3022X
                  +PRECISION 350/372

                  1350 PINION TO 1LE:
                  +NEAPCO/PDQ 3-3140
                  +BRUTE FORCE 3-3140BF
                  +ROCKFORD K460
                  +SPICER 5-460X
                  +PRECISION 348

                  ****************
Now looking at that, one would believe they are different. What confuses me is that it states the 1LE uses a 1310 on the DS side. So, I'm assuming(?) that means the tranny side?

Then, it states that the pinion yoke is a 3R. A what?

Then the two tables: The table listing stock rear to 1LE...is this the 3R u-joint? Are these numbers even correct??

Then the second table: 1350 pinion to 1LE. Is this what the stock pinion is, or does this mean what u-joint to use if the rear was not stock, and changed to a 1350 yoke.

I checked Summit, and as I thought, they list nothing to help. Then I checked Jegs and sure enough, they give a pull-down menu asking if the shaft is aluminum or not. So, one would assume the u-joints are specific to the 1LE and steel DS, right?

                  This is crazy...

See if this sheds some light on this foggy situation. Scroll down to the slip yokes and it shows the difference in the 1350 and 3R series. It's about 3/4 the way down the page.

It looks like you can tell which one by the cap size.
                    3R uses 1 1/8" caps
                    1350 uses 1 3/16" caps

First off, let me remind everybody that not all LS1 driveshafts were aluminum- I know mine wasn't since it also came with the high fuel mileage 2.73 rear end.

That said, I swapped an aluminum shaft from a B4C camaro. Not sure, the B4C's used a lot of parts from the 1LE bin- swing arm bushings and swing arms, etc. They are built pretty heavy for the pursuit work they were supposed to do-

Anyway, it was a total bolt-in, the yoke was the same. Certainly lightened the driveline- Suppose I could look up the part numbers when I get back to work-
