  • Tire problem concerning storage.

    I got a flat today
Today was also the day to put the hawk away

    Here's my issue:
I was going to buy new rears in spring anyway. But what should I do now with the flat? I don't want to buy new ones and have them flat-spot over the winter nor leave the flat on there cause I am guessing it would be bad for it to sit like that for the winter. I am NOT putting the car up on jack stands.

    Suggestions / ideas please help!

Go get one of those cheapo string-type tire plug kits at Walmart, plug it, air it up, and park it. Buy new tires in the spring.

A lot of anxiety here for just a flat tire.

Newer steel belted tires don't normally flat spot.

Actually...they will, just not as bad. Especially with more rubber as you go up in tire sizes.

I guess I don't see the problem with putting the car on jack stands - it will be overall better for it anyway since you won't have to worry as much about spring sag and won't have to worry at all about flat spots. I know it's a pain to deal with, especially if you have an emergency and have to move it, but overall I think it's probably worth it.

Another option is to find a cheap rim/tire in a junkyard and keep that flat tire around for the spring. In the spring, air it up, put it on the car, and drive to the tire store.

I'd fix the flat and get new ones in the spring. If it's nothing major, it shouldn't be that expensive.

C'mon, with gas half as much as it used to, surely there is some spare $$.

I will take the car out once a week for a small 1 mile trip a week. Will that prevent the flat spotting.

And this is new to me! This is the first time I have ever stored a vehicle away and I love my hawk and miss it already. This 1997 Caravan isn't cutting it!

It won't flat spot if you move it once a week. Radial tires resist it to begin with. I've stored lots of cars and have never had a problem with flatspotting tires.

what size tires are you running? cause i got a decent 17 in. tire in my garage ill check it to make sure its good i could let you have for like 20 bucks or 20+ gas to bring it to you. if they are 16s i know i have a tire you can mount on it. the tread isnt the greatest but it will hold air and you can drive on it. and even 15s i have a few 205s you can throw on. so dependin on what you need i might have a tire you can throw on untill the winters over im in zip 21901 and dont mind a lil drive. ecspecially when i get my new Z done

That is an old picture. I don't have any of the cars that are in that picture.

I happen to like storage dollies. They go under each wheel, have their own 4 castors and tehy cradle the tires. Jack up the car, put one under each wheel and you can push the car around the shop. Since the part that goes under each tire has a curved surface, I've never had one cause a flat spot in 20 years.
