  • Need help deciding on new Cam

I have a 94 t/a A4 with every bolt-on 3.73 posi. I am going to be ordering comp cams 1.6 pro rockers, type "R" lifters basically the whole cam kit. Just wondering if a cc306 would be too extreme for stock heads or if a xe 224/230 would be good. I am looking for a street/strip cam. This car is also my daily driver.I am open to all suggestions on cams to look into.

    Thanks

I have the XE224/230 in my car and love it. In fact, I think I could go a bit bigger without any street driveability problems. My heads are stock and you can see the mods in my sig.

Andy, this is mostly because your in a M6.

I went with the 218/224 cam in my 1994 A4 with GTP Stage II heads.

This was on stock converter and 3.23s.

I think with an Ed Wright reprogram, I could of definitely went with a bigger
      cam.

I could not launch with drag radials and Ed Wright reprogram with stock converter and 3.23s. I'd end up sticking
at the line. Street tires would be best
      since they'd break loose some.

Now with the 2800 stall converter and 3.23s, I could definitely cam up some
      on the A4.

Re: Need help deciding on new Cam

        I used the regular lifters.

Alot of people had problems with the Type R came out.

A computer reprogram will be a must.

Re: Need help deciding on new Cam

Today on the MAFB email list:

what is the consensus on perf. hyd. lifters? I know the CompR lifters were
the ticket a few years back but I have also heard of more than a few
occasions of those failing. Any thoughts, opinions, or better yet,
          experience to back up either.

          Tony

Around a year ago or so I bought a set of Comp R lifters from MarkF. They were in his fresh motor that failed on the road course a couple years ago at the national f-body event. I seem to remember that they had less than 5K miles on them (Mark?). They look perfect, but I can't bring myself to rip off the intake just to install these (laziness) and at this point I'd rather have my money back out of them. I think I paid Mark $125 for them. I'll let them go for $100 plus shipping (which couldn't be more than $5 or so).

(As people here know, Comp Cams stopped production of the R lifters for a while due to a rumored business problem with the original supplier and then resumed production recently with a different manufacturer. I think there has been at one reported failure with the new ones on this list. I can't remember anyone having a problem with the original ones and there are lots of folks here running the original ones hard. Anyhow, these are the original ones, not the ones made by the new manufacturer.)

          Thanks,
          RichJ

Count me as one of the failure cases. Mine are on the way back to Comp
for analysis. I installed them after Indy this year, one event at
Pocono, and somewhere in there the little steel retainer plate on one
snapped and ended up stuck to my oil drain plug magnet.

I went back to my '88 OEM hyd rollers and the engine's happy as a
clam. 1min 12sec lap time at Lime Rock kinda happy.

Sorry 'bout that. I thought you had an M6 car, even though your post says it's an A4. Oops!

              hey andy!

How did you install your Comp R Lifters?

What adjustment procedure did you use?

I adjusted the rockers by setting them to zero lash, then turning them 1/4 turn more. I haven't had any problems with these lifters.I've got about 2,000 miles on them now.
