  • Which way is easier?

So here's the situation... I've got a 1968 Camaro and the rear axle is an open diff. I've got another rear axle with a posi unit that should bolt right in. Would it be easier to just swap the axles or take the carrier out of the posi axle and put it in the other? Also they are the same axles.

In my experience it is easier to just swap the whole axle- sort of almost blacksmith work- big bolts and lots of torque- probably be good to have half-inch sockets and breaker bars- if you swap the internals, you will have to adjust the mesh of the pinion, and fuss with shims and the mesh pattern- a pretty intricate job if you haven't set one up before.

If the rearend assemblies have the same suspension mounting points and it's a direct bolt-in swap then it's definitely simpler to just swap them out intact.
