  • SES Codes

Been having a problem with the ragtop thowing codes indescriminately. Have had a variety, incluing misfire on #1 cyl, O2 sensors, catalytic covnerter not efficient (both sides), MAF --etc etc. Most common has been o2 sensors. Could all these other codes be causing the o2 codes, or vise versa.

Rough idea on cost to have the o2 sensors repalced by a local shop if that really is what the problem is? Gotta do something-inspection due next month

The ragtop has now hit 136,000 miles-original clutch original brake rotors, but something not good with the emissions system.

    Thanks.

Without knowing the specific codes, its pretty much impossible for anyone to answer your question. There are numerous codes for the O2 sensors, and for many other systems. Each one addresses a specific problem.

Why would you pay someone to replace the O2 sensors? Buy the correct, genuine AC/Delco (Delphi) sensors at a discount from an online GM parts dealer, and an O2 sensor socket and save yourself a bundle. But before you start replacing parts, figure out if they need to be replaced.

Start by listing the specific codes, and describe the circumstance under which each one set.

      Codes

ok-the codes are 420 and 430, which have to do with inefficiency in teh cats if I understand correctly-meaning bad cats. I found and repaired a leak in the vacuum line which was causing a lean condition. suspect this screwed the cats. Make sense?

      Any thots?

And, how tough to replace laying on a garage floor?

And, repalce teh O2 sensors at teh same time?

Any leaning out caused by a vacuum leak should have been picked up and corrected by the feedback from the O2 sensors. It isn't likely that the vacuum leak caused a problem with the catalytic convertors or with the O2 sensors.

Very unusual for both cats to experience a problem at the exact same time. Is it possible that you have contaminated them with leaded fuel, using silcon-based RTV somewhere in the intake track, a coolant leak using the green coolant?

I've never crawled under an LS1 exhaust system, but knowing where the stock cats are on the LS1, accessing the after-cat O2 sensors shouldn't be that difficult. You can run the front wheels up on ramps, or jack the front end and use jack-stands to gain a few extra inches to maneuver under the car. With the O2 sensor socket (you can borrow one, rather than buy one) and a good 1/2" breaker bar you should be able to unscrew them.

Maybe someone here who has changed their LS1 after-cat sensors can comment.

          Fred=

Thanks. Have only used plain pump gas, unleaded to premium depending. Never sprayed anything (did use MAF cleaner to clean the MAF but dried iy thouroughly before reinstalling), no coolant loss or problems-car runs fine, good torque, good MPG (27+ highway) no other indication of problems except teh SES light--and gotta get emission inspected next month.

Considering going with magna flow repalcement cats and new O2s becuase I plan to keep the ragtop forever.

          Any more ideas?
