  • Tranny clunk at WOT

I just had a new tranny mount installed at a Pontiac dealer (they installed a Westar mount), and since then I am experiencing clunking sounds at WOT in 1st gear. No clunks at all with normal driving, or when I floor it at 50mph (downshift into second). I never had this before the tranny mount was replaced (dealer said original mount was worn out). I posted on other boards but would like some more opinions on this. Thanks!

Sounds like a mount to me...

It's a thud right under the center console right?

So you're saying there could be something wrong with the new mount that was installed?

The clunk sounds like it is happening somewhere between the center console to the rear.

Yes. I've seen tech hang bad parts all the time...

Maybe a bolt is loose...have em check it again. They replaced it and now it clunks...simple as that.

Is the new mount polyurethane? I have heard that the poly mounts are harder than the stock one, and transmit a lot more noise-

Incorrect. If it was due to the Bushing being Poly, It would emit More road noise not Clunk!

Chances are they installed a Bad bushing or they installed it wrong. I would go back and have them check it. If worse comes to worse, Order an Energy bushing from AutoZone or Summit and Have that thing installed. The Stock one is rubber, and is known to be pulled apart rather quickly. Yes there might a slight increase in road noise from changing from rubber to Poly, but you can barely tell.

What the new mount really is, is an aftermarket OEM style tranny mount. Looks like factory, but not made by GM.

I just dropped it off to the dealer since I can't seem to figure it out on my own. They just got a new OEM mount and will install that one instead of the Westar mount (hopefully this will really fix my issue).

Its OEM style just made out of polyurethane instead of rubber.

Stock OEM mount is installed, but it did not correct the issue. Was I better off with the Westar mount? Is it really made out of polyurethane???

I am almost thinking misfire, but I am not getting any "check engine" lights.

That still sounds like a tranny mount to me..... did thed same exact guys do the install? they gave you the Westar one back? Do you have the car under warranty or something? if not, why not do it yourself, that way you know it is done right. Did you have to pay them twice for the same exact thing? Not to bang any "professionals" but i have seen torque specs completely ignored in some cases.

Yes the exact same guys installed the new OEM mount. No I didn't get the Westar back (they charged me for the difference between the Westar and OEM, and did not charge additional labor).

I am not very comfortable working on something I know nothing about (I do change my own oil, however).

Was the Westar mount broken when you got it back?

                            No.

What really kills me is the tech went over everything under the car (driveshaft, u-joints, torque arm, etc). He said everything is good and tight under there.

EDIT -- If it was an engine knock, where would the noise come from and what would it sound like? Would that also give me a SES light (which I do not have at the moment).

Dealer says it is the exhaust colliding with the driveshaft loop (Lakewood). I can't seem to remove the loop (I was able to install it 6 years ago, but now I can't get it off the car!)
