  • Transmission conversion kits

I made a post about this a little awhile ago. I'm looking to convert my car over to a manual transmission and I got a lot of help from this forum. I'm running into some problems though.

The transmission that was recommended to me of this site was this one:
    http://www.ddperformance.com/chevyT-56.htm
It's just what I need and I'm very excited about it.

For the conversion kit, this site was recommended to me:
    http://www.contemporarycorvette.com/
The only problem is, I just called them and they don't have any conversion kits for my application in stock.

I found someone who can help me install all of this and do the conversion. I have a great place to buy the transmission. I have plenty of money. I just need the required parts to make this conversion happen. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance!

I have done the conversion before but before anyone can say anything we need to know what you are driving. Sorry between all of us we know a lot but no-ne of us are psychic.

yeah, that might help if I list my car, lol.

I'm currently driving a 1994 Pontiac Firebird with a 1997 LT1 out of a Camaro Z28. I've done basic upgrades (heads, cam, intake, nitrous, ect), but other than a shift kit, my 4L60E is completely stock. My tranny blew sky high towards the end of race season last year, so I figured it's time to convert. Manual is more fun anyway.

I should also mention that I have a stock 1 piece drive shaft (I was able to get the drive shaft out of that same camaro so I could do away with the crappy 2 piece my car came with) and a stock 10 bolt 7.5 inch rear end. Yep, i'm driving a mobile hand grenade. I would love to get a 9" while doing this conversion, but I don't have the money. I'm going to have to wait on that.

Was your car a V6 car?

The car came stock with a 3.4L V6. I swapped it out awhile ago.

Wow, a 7.5 and swapping to a manual? Do you have sticky tires? If you launch that manual with sticky tires and your engine, that rear will be done. The auto was much less shock to the drivetrain.

I know you're set on the manual, which is fine, but have you ever considered an alternative of a built 4L60E with a stall?

If you eventually get the 9", I have step-by-step instructions posted on the forum for the install. It isn't too bad of an install, and parts totalled to be around $2500-$3k.

I ran my car for 5 years with the T56 and stock 10-bolt, running a few bolt-ons and a 125-shot of nitrous. Included a couple trips to the track with ET Streets. Rear axle survived. Just takes a bit of common sense on the launch. The 10-bolt is weak, but its not a given that a T56 + sticky tires is a death sentence. It depends how you treat it. I wouldn't attempt a 5K clutch dump, but feather it out of the hole and it should survive.

I also never had any trouble with the stock clutch, and when I pulled it out for the Street Twin install (after a 12-bolt install ) at about 80,000 miles, the disc was barely worn.

Wow, I guess it's the luck of the draw. My rear gave up with a bolt-on motor only putting 275 RWHP down.

in all honestly I wont be racing my car until I get the rear end. It will give me time to break in the new transmission and get used to it anyway.

Just to update this in case anyone is interested. I found this place: http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/

They were extremely helpful and very nice. I bought a complete conversion kit for the exact swap out i'm doing and it only set me back about $900 for the kit.
