    Well the biggest difference between the 97 and the 98-02 models is the engine.

    The 97 has the LT1: a 350cid 5.7L iron block, aluminum heads (reverse coolant flow; which means the heads are cooled first to allow a higher compression retio than a conventional direction coolant flow) and a single coil/distributor ignition system (poor placement in my opinion): the distributor is located behind and under the water pump. Frequent failure of the distributor (also referred to as the Optispark) is common on these vehicles...well mine at least

    The 98-02 models had the LS1: a 347cid 5.7L aluminum block, aluminum heads, and direct coil-per-cylinder ignition;

      Look for an LS1 base TA. That last thing you want to do is deal with the opti-spark!!!!

        I should mention: the opti isn't all that bad unless you get it wet, or it gets wet from a leaky hose or w/p, or if you get the underbody washed at a car wash, or if you drive in the rain with no air dam, or U571 it into a puddle of water.

            do you mean what specific model, year, and engine combo is best, or for a specific car you want to know that you should check for before buying such as rot, belts, hoses, noises...??

            are you looking to work on it as a project?
            just want it to pass inspection and drive it?
