  • A.I.R. pump?

My SES light came on and the code it's throwing is for the secondary air injection. Should I just replace the A.I.R.(smog) pump. or is there a chance something else is at fault? Thanks in advance http://www.f-body.com/forum/newthrea...newthread&f=2#

GM issued a recall on this sometime back, so you can actually have the dealer fix it for free.

      Here is the Recall

      Recall notice is number 99083.
      1995 Camaro Vin S2100001 to S2229521
      1995 Firebird Vin S2200001 S2256723
      1996 Camaro Vin T2100001 T2166869
      1996 Firebird Vin T2200001 T2232760
      1997 Camaro Vin V2100002 V2160181
      1997 Firebird Vin V2200001 V2232666
Dealer will replace air pump with new one.(Old unit causes malfunction indicator
light to come on because of corrosion of the internal solenoid).Could this explain why air pump fuses are blowing or some other electrical problems like low voltage at over extreme electrical use (headlights on, brake lights on, whipers on, A/C on, radio-CD player on, all at the same time).
General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Campaign involving all 1995 1996 1997 camaros and firebirds with the 5.7L engines. The Air Injection Reactor (A.I.R) pump emmision control system on these vehicles may fail to operate and cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp to illuminate. This condition maybe due to corrosion of a solenoid internal to the A.I.R. pump.

Your Chevrolet Dealer will install a
new A.I.R. pump assembly kit that is designed to protect
the A.I.R. pump system from failing
due to internal corrosion. This service will be performed
      FREE OF CHARGE.

Contact your Chevrolet dealer as soon as possible to arrange a date to assure parts
availability. Instructions have been sent to your dealer. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule, process, and repair your vehicle.

Should your dealer be unable to schedule a service date within reasonable time, please contact the chevrolet customer assistance center at 1-800-222-1020.

If you have already paid for some or all of the cost to have your A.I.R. pump repaired you should contact your dealer to seek reimbursement. Please provide the dealer with your original paid receipts or invoices verifying the repair, the amount charged, proof of payment, the date of payment of those charges and proof of ownership of the vehicle at the time of the repair by October 31,2001. Only
repairs performed prior to the release of this recall(October,2000) are eligible for
      reimbursement.

We are sorry to cause you this
inconvenience however we have taken this action in the
      intrest of your continued satisfaction
      with our product.

Thanks for the info. I bought the car in September and it has no cats. Will
they still install it considering the car doesn't meet ozone requirements?

That could be an issue...but it depends on your mechanic.

Up here in NJ...I highly doubt the mechanic/dealer will be willing to do it, simply because having no cats is highly illegal, and the dealership may not wish to get involved simply because it could be a "sting" operation by the State. Any shop found guilty of knowingly disabling or passing a vehicle without emission controls faces a stiff penalty and possible revocation of their license.

Now, in your neck of the woods...who knows. I would talk to the mechanic and ask him straight up, "is this going to be a problem for you?' He might be more willing to overlook the issue, with a little grease...if you know what I mean.

The dealer may not even look for cats. It is their responsibility to perform the recall, not act as a gov't agent, IMHO.
Be sure the car has not already had the recall done. They usually put a sticker under the hood. If it is not there or maybe has come off, you can still call a dealer with your VIN and have them look up the info.

On the other hand, if you don't have cats, the AIR pump is not serving any useful purpose.

I plan on getting some high flow cats soon. Does the AIR pump not affect the way the car runs? Also can anyone recommend a good high flow cat? I will call the stealership to see if it has already been done in the mean time.

The AIR pump only runs at startup and then shuts off within a few minutes.

You could also get someone to take out of the computer the code for the air pump. That would be a good time to fix the fan temp settings and a bunch of other stuff.

I might get the computer tuned soon also to delete like you said Jeff, but I would really like the car to not smell so rich. I guess I have a big decision to make.
