  • Coolant fan squeak?

I noticed today when I turned the car off, I was hearing a squeaking sound that got slower and slower, and finally stopped. I assume that is one of my coolant fans.

Has anyone else had experience with this? Does it mean the fan is on its way out?

I have a manual fan switch...and yes, when I switch it on and off, it squeaks until it finally stops. Been that way for years...

I do believe removing it, and giving it a good clean would help, dont think there's bearings or anything, just the brush motor...but too lazy.

It could last for a long time, but it does mean the motor is not as healthy as it once was. Replacement of the fan motor would be the sure fix.

LOL, you already know a squeak does not mean imminent death-just death at some point in the future.

(My wife's car has a fan that sometimes squeaks as it comes to a stop. I'm not out there changing it yet )

Like Rob said...a squeaking electric motor is not as bad as a mechanical "metal to metal" squeak. (i.e., "Something in my my valve train is squeaking. Is this a bad thing??" uhhh...yeah..)

Most likely, there is a small amount of surface rust building up on the armature, could even be the bearings. But, it could do this for another 20 years..

I drove the car again for a while and stopped the car. Now I am thinking the noise is not from the cooling fan(s). The squeak I heard was not very loud, and did not sound very consistent (kinda went *.*.*.*.....*......*...........*............*...*. .................*.........*...........). The * represents the brief "squeaks".
