  • NFB: Does this seem right? (Tranny Q)

    Hey Folks,

Been a long time. Hope all is well!

Hey... I have a car Q so I'm comin' to the source!

I have my 99' Subaru Outback in for service and I'm getting an "oil" smell inside the car. Turns out the front differential fluid is leaking into the tranny and they say that subaru says to replace the tranny, to a tune of $3,500!

Does that sound right? Can't they drain the tranny and diff, pull the tranny, replace the seals, reinstall and add fluid to tranny and diff?

Thanks for any feedback and Happy Holidays!

Scoobies have been notorious for grenading the tranny. The big problem is the dealers aren't well versed in rebuilding a trans, they prefer to replace the unit. Read- $$$$ Better off going to a dedicated trans shop.
