  • How do you get codes without a code reader?

My 94 Firebird has an OBD 1 ECM and Auto Zone said they can only pull OBD II codes. So is theyr'e a way to get the codes by jumping terminals and reading the blinks of the SES light?

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think that the only year you can contect the A,B terms is in the 93, but like i said that is not 100%

Nope, you need a real OBD-I scanner or code reader (not the $19.95 kind).

Correct. 93 was the last year you could flash the codes on the SES light by shorting the pins in the ALDL connector. 94 and 95 require an OBD-I scanner. 94 uses the normal 12-pin OBD-I connector, 95 uses a 16-pin OBD-II style connector and requires an adapter or jumper wires.

AutoXray made a decent OBD-I scanner. Try and find one used, typically less than $100. Do not get it confused with their "cheapie" ($30) code scanner - that is simply a switch that shorts the ALDL pins. Says on the box it will work on 94, but it will not.

There is also free scanning software available from FreeScan (unlimited free use) and TTS DataMaster (20 free uses). All you need then is a laptop and a cable:

Then you can use this to interpret the data:

              Dan,

I picked up an autoxray EZ-Scan 3000 from this company a couple of weeks ago.

Northwest Wholesalers........70 bucks, and it's brand new.

When it arrived it was in the original packaging complete with a variety of cables and upgrade software in a nice storage case. Can't beat this deal, IMHO!

Here's a picture of what the unit looks like:
