  • My bird is dead

I got in my car yesterday to leave work, turned the key and got nothing but lights on the dash. Dosnt crank at all, tried my spare key and checked all fuses and the battery connections. Her engine has also started making a rapping sound kinda sounds like its coming from the oil pan. I've had the car for 6 years and its been nothing but good to me now it might be heading for the crusher, please help.

How hard is a starter replacement, although I'm kinda leary about dumping money into the car with the engine making noises. And its stuck at work right now, is it normal for a starter to just die with no symptoms, also when I turn the key all lights come on the dash like they are supposed to and the "security light" flashes is it supposed to flash?

My security light is flashing does that mean I have a short/broken wire? Whats the best way to clean the "lock cylinder"?

I checked my key with a multimeter and it reads 1860ohms, what range resistor would I need to do the vats bypass?

looks like you have pellet code 7

Your problem is definitely VATS. I just wrapped some scotch tape around my key and tried to start the car. Nothing, not even a click, and the security light was flashing.

Just get a VATS by-pass. Much easier than trying to fix it...relatively easy and cheap.

^ Good advice, trying to fix it just leaves you stranded again.

The original lock cyliner lasted 15 years. That's not bad.

Replacing it would not "leave him stranded again" anytime soon.

                      Just something to consider....

I plan on doing the bypass just dont know exactly witch resistor to buy, both my keys read 1860ohms on the multimeter do I need to by a resistor with the exact same ohm's?

Kind of funny then, mine went out again within 6 months and was a total waste of money piled on top of a towing bill.

That's interesting. Maybe the replacement parts are so old that the wires on them are getting brittle from just setting in the parts bin? Otherwise I would expect a fresh replacement to last as long as the original.

Just take this knowlege to RadioShack. They'll "hook you up like a tow truck".
