  • 1990 camaro needs new ignition lock cyl.

1990 camaro friend has he bought many years ago. we cannot find the ignition key. he went to the dealer to see about a new key and they told him he must buy a new cylinder and key then tow it to the dealer and have it installed so they can set up the security that comes with them. something about setting or reading the ohms rating.basically this all ads up to $$$ he doesn't want to spend if there is another way. we just need a lock cylinder and key that work together and are not worried about it being a security type. junk yards want to sell their columns with the key and cylinder so they won't seperate them to sell. anyone face this or have any fact based solutions on it?? thank you

Unfortunately this started in 1989. A new lock cylinder will come with a "Test" key but you then need to cut new keys with the correct transponder to work. If not, the car will not start. I thought the dealer would be able to order keys based on the VIN unless the current lock is damaged.

just measure the ohms in the old key, and wire in the correct resistor into the security system, theres a write up on www.thirdgen.org on how to do it. then go to your local parts store and get a new cylinder and key

I belive that is the problem. They don't have the key to measure.
