Noise??

I have a 1987 IROC Z there is a whining noise coming from the rear end. It a little whine at aceleration and cruse but get very very loud at turning left & right ,deceleration & braking (feels vibration in brake peddle). A friend thought it might be bad bearing in the rear. If so? how do I know? and with one?

I have to agree mine started making the same sounds when i had my 88 iroc. the gears were shot. replaced the entire rear end with a 12 bolt. but if you dont have the money see about getting it rebuilt.

Dont just junk it. Find out what the problem is. Its very hard to diagnose a noise over the internet, but if it is indeed the rearend, there are only a handful of bearings back there. If its an axle bearing, its not a bad job. Even if its a pinion bearing (worst bearing to get to) the job is not horrible if you arent changing gears. You just use the original shims and there are no measurements to be taken. You just have to press the bearing on and off. (Or heat it in an oven to put it on).

If it is a broken or cracked gear or something of that nature (which normally causes a knocking, not a whining), the job gets a little more technical, involving setting the pinion depth with new shims, checking the backlash with a dial indicator and setting the preload on the pinion with the proper torque on the crush sleeve. Improper backlash between the gears can also cause a whining sound. If its a gear, you may be better off going with another rearend, if you are not mechanically enclined or do not have access to a press. The job would probably cost between 500 and 900 at a shop depending on the gear you use and if you change the ratio (program the PCM etc..).
