  • Magnetic Oil Drain Plug

Did the LS1 come with a magnetic oil plug stock? I've read that some of the V's and vettes did. My bolt is stripped pretty bad so I need to replace it. If it was magnetic and I just didn't pull it off, I am going to feel like a pretty big moron.

Also, is anyone else using one of these magnetic plugs?

It should be a magnetic one. Mine is...

Im confused on your question thoug... by "magnetic" they mean that there is a magnetic tip on the other end of the drain plug (to catch small metallic bits). It's still threaded like a bolt though.

Ohhh...I thought by magnetic that it is just a strong magnet that holds the bolt in place so I can just pull it off during an oil change.

No its still threaded. I dont think the stock one is magnetic. I have a '95 Formula and my stock one was not but have replaced it that a mag. one. Any auto store should have one. Autozone, Autovalue etc. Just get the right thread of coarse. It should thread it ok. Hopfully the threads on your pan are not messed up.

i was wondering if people who have magnetic oil drain plugs ever find anything stuck to it? i mean is it normal to be any metal shavings on it , like normal wear and tear?

You should never see shavings. There may be a fine, powdery substance that will build up over time, but not visible metal shavings.

^Exactly, maybe just a drop or two of what looks like mud.

If you're seeing shavings I would imagine your oil pressure at any given temperature will be lower than it was before. Shavings usually forecast bearing failure, mains, cam, piston pin etc.
