Two ways. remove the exhaust, drop the tank down.
Second..... cut an access panel:

Cut the access panel. I don't have too much experience working on cars yet, and I did it a few weekends ago without any big problems. It really wasn't that tough. Plus, if you ever have to mess with it again, it takes a whole 2 minutes instead of another weekends worth of work.1996 Trans Am M6 (T-Tops)

PANEL LOCATION SAME ON A CONVERTIBLE GAS TANK?
Panel is the SMART way to go.. I spent a DAY dropping the tank in my 2004 5.3L Yukon in January and it took 2 weeks to recover from the health problems I got from laying on the cold ground, drinking gas / getting in my eyes / etc...
Screw that.
A 1988 VW cabriolet I worked on once had an access panel and it was 30 minutes to swap a fuel pump. Should have learned the lessen there -- but with the Yukon I think frame rails or seats are in the way.
DOES anyone know if the convertible gas tank fuel pump is in the same location? Would having the top-holding area there prevent the use of a panel?
Thanks
CS.

The convertible has a real trunk, and a firewall separating the trunk from the passenger compartment, so the layout of the sheet metal over the tank is going to be different.Fred
