  • Help with oil leak please! (pics)

Hello, noticed my car would leave a small spot of oil every once in a while. I jacked it up today, and wiped it down a bit underneath. It seemed as whereever it was coming from, it coated the whole underside of the tranny. Can anyone tell from these two pics what it might be?

I'm not too mechanically inclined, so if it's a dumb question, sorry..

Thanks for any and all help.

The leak causing the mess in your pictures is most likely seeping from up above. I'd put my bet on the intake manifold, but it could be a valve cover too. It looks just like the bottom of mine used to.

Is there oil on the back of the block by the rear edge of the intake manifold? Take a rag and wipe back there to see if it is wet. This is VERY common on LT-1 cars. Almost a given it will happen at some point. Take a closer look at it with a flashlight from beneath and check it out.

DO NOT go to the URL "Nigel" posted. If you do, just go to your task manager and cancel the iexplore application and the stupid pop ups will stop.

I think Nigels first post should be his last. Moderators?

It is not from the intake manifold i think but check it anyway. If the intake was leaking it would be leaking on the exhaust too so there would be smell and a little bit smoke. The oil level sensor on lt1s always leak and check your valve covers. thanks

I'd have to disagree with you. Mine was leaking like a sive from the back edge of the intake and I never had a bit of smoke. The back edge of the intake is nowhere near the exhaust manifolds.

The oil runs down the back of the block, on the bell housing and just makes a mess everywhere and the wind kicks it all over.

'ol steve is at it again eh? What a loser.

I would degrease the whole thing and start from scratch to see where it comes from. The front grime could be the front cover gasket, front crank seal, water pump or opti seal. The rear could be the rear crank seal, oil level sender, a leak around the base of the filter, intake manifold...... there are lots of places it can ooze from.

Who is this Nigel Idiot? I must have missed the story behind him. Anyway, I agree that someone like that is best ignored.

Now, about the oil problem. My 96 Z28 had the infamous intake leak, and I didn't smell burning either. The factory sealer doesn't exactly do the job. At that time, I used a breather on the oil fill to minimize crankcase pressure re-blowing the new seal-is this still regarded as a beneficial option? If I had an LT-1, I would want to do almost everything to avoid having to re-do the intake. Oh yes, when I did mine, it was a good thing my wife was there-she asked me, right as I was re-installing the intake "is that towel supposed to be there?" pointing to the towel I had laying in the lifter valley-that would have been bad...

                  Best of Luck
