  • NFB: Yep, that's my letter in Pontiac Enthusiast.

My two-cent's worth regarding the new GTO appears in the new issue of Pontiac Enthusiast (which has a comparison test between the new GTO and a Mustang Mach1).

    Reactions welcomed.

Speaking of the GTO, did anyone see the new commercial for it? It starts out with a bunch of smoke and you hear tires squealing. Then, you can see the tires and they say something about the power of the new GTO. I wish they would have run more ads like that for the F-Body.

Ya I don't get the rag er I mean mag any more since they started ragging on the F-body a couple years or so ago. I devoted a whole issue practically to bad mouthing the F-car so I cancelled my subscription and never looked back.

              My letter as written

I am reluctant to scan and post from copyrighted material. Nevertheless, here is my letter as I sent it (it was published virtually in this form), which was as a response to an editorial regarding the new GTO:

"You’re point is well taken regarding the 'disappointment' some of the 'Pontiac faithful' have expressed about the 2004 GTO. The original GTO was little more than a re-badged Tempest with a good shot of testosterone. Later models were gussied-up LeMans and (sigh) Chevy Novas. Considering that history, it matters little that the new GTO derives from a Holden Monaro.

"As for the lack of scoops (real or fake), Corvettes don’t have them, either, and that doesn’t seem to hurt either their performance or sales.

"Yet, I question whether the new GTO will be a success in the marketplace. While Jim Wangers’ review should assuage any critic’s concerns about this car’s overall performance, I hope it looks better 'in person' than it does in the pictures. Also, I look for Pontiac dealers to kill this 'mid-$30K car' the same way Ford dealers killed the new Thunderbird: with a $20K 'market price adjustment.'

"If they do, the price of a new GTO will exceed the price of a new Cadillac CTS-V, a car having a LS6 Corvette engine and – according to Car and Driver – a zero-to-60 time of less than 4.7 seconds (better than Jim Wangers' test GTO). And the Cadillac will probably have better residual value, too.

"I hope I'm wrong and the new GTO is a smashing success. Pontiac deserves our thanks for making the effort."
