  • Governor holding me back

I have a 1993 3.4liter automatic Firebird that has a governor set to 110 and i was wondering if theres anyway around this other than a chip or progammer.. Ive looked around and havent been able to find either for the 3.4 liter if anyone knows where i could buy 1 that would be great or if theres a way around the setting thats good to. Thanks

What's your reasoning for wanting to go higher than 110?

The limiter cannot be changed without re-programming.

Jay has a good point. Most places 110 will get you a wreckless driving and possibly a night in jail I know what you mean though cause my formula had a speed limiter. I think it's a mental thing....knowing you could even if you don't. Also remember you better have speed rated tires. I imagine a blowout at 110+ would cause a pretty nasty wreck. Anywhoo I'm pretty sure you have to change the programing. I know that's how ya have to do it for the LT1s. Personally I wouldn't worry with it untill you hit the limiter while going through the traps and with a 3.4 that's prolly not gonna happen anyways.....Later

That's exactly what I was thinking.

But, if you really want to do it, I am sure there are programmers out there that will do it.

Nice Guy pretty much nailed my thinking but i guess u guys are right theres really no need to go over 110 not like my car will go that fast in a 1/4 mile

Besides that, doubtful that the car will go much faster than that anyway. I thought I read somewhere that without the limiter the 3.4 auto was good for 112.

If you are "friends" with the tune-up tech at a local dealership, they can plug in their Tech2 and change it.

                  Speed limiter question

Do the WS6 TransAMs have a govenor limiting their top end? I have read that my 2001 will do about 180 mph stock. I have noticed when I stomp on it in 1st or 2nd, and get the revs up to about 6k the car will surge a little - that must be the rev limiter.

Not without dropping it off a cliff. It takes way more HP than these cars have stock to do that. Top speed for a stock LS1 is around 158-160 tops.

If the car came with speed rated tires 'Z' rated then it did not come with a rev. limiter. Even on the older ones like my '95 Formula. I've got the wider 'Z' rated tires with no rev. limiter.

that was funny - off a cliff - it would need to be a very long fall to hit that kind of speed -

so no limiter - question for all stock ws6 types - how fast have you gone in 6th, at what point do you run out of rpms?

not true my friend, my first 1994 Z-28 came factory with z rated tires, and it had a speed limiter at 154, i was turning 5200 and it bagged out at 154, i could have probably gotten it up to 156 or 158 with out it but it was definately there, it was like some one was turning off the motor, then turning it back on again a second later.

That's how my old car (95 formula) was except it had the stupid 110-115mph limiter even though mine had the 155mph speedo. No Z rated from factory meant limiter. Why they would do that on a 275hp performance car is beyond me. Z rated tires should be standard if you ask me. I made sure my Z didn't have those lame options like my Formula had, you know 2.73 gears speedo limiter etc. I didn't know about that stuff when I bought it. I thought that if it had the 155mph speedo it had the good axle and no speed limiter. Guess I was wrong. It costs alot to fix these things too. Grrrrr. Anywhoo I know much more about them now and was carefull when I got my new car. Uhhh sorry to ramble.....Later

I think he was referring to the 110-115 mph limiter. Most people never get it up to 154(too dangerous) but there is a limiter there for Z equipped cars, just alot of people never run it that high. Why they bother with that I don't know. Prolly insurance reasons like the 190ish mph limits on the Suzuki Hayabusa and Ninja ZX12R sport bikes......Later
