  • Rear brake noise??

Hey everyone, I've been having a problem with my rear brake calipers, mostly the passenger side, but the drivers side is starting to bark at me a little too.

Basically, I'm getting a scraping metal on metal from the passenger side rear on a quick right hand turn, it sounds like I'm dragging a rotor on the pavement with a rope. This happened BEFORE AND AFTER new pads and rotors and did not change, if anything has gotten worse after greasing the caliper guides.
There is no noise while I am applying braking force in a turn or while going straight. Front brakes are totally fine, 0 problems.

It also looks as though my pads are not putting as much pressure towards the inner circumference of the rotors as well.
The entire brake system is either original or OEM replacement.

    Thanks again,
    -Alex

when was the last time you completely disassembled the calipers and lubed the pins? If you already did that, it's possible the calipers are in need of a rebuild.

Just recently, Since they're fine (no noise or vibration) when applying brake pressure, could it just be as simple as poor piston return be it springs or just a sticking piston? They moved fine when I compressed them putting the new brakes in. Considering my symptoms I guess it could be the problem; only getting noise when the wheels have an outward moving force on them... Still, it doesn't sound at all like pads squeaking, It sounds like wear indicators squawking. This is very confusing to me, I've never been 100% savvy with varying tolerance mechanics like brakes haha. Thanks for the help, I think I might break the calipers down and take a look, maybe just pick up re-manned units at the store since they're probably about the same price for the rebuild kits.

How old are the rotors? I've seen rotors worn so badly that it results in a rough, raised lip at the outer edge of the rotor that will contact the pad backing plates when the brakes are used, or when the axle moves in the housing due to cornering loads.

The rotors are brand new, the old ones had a raised edge like you're talking about, I'm having the same problem before and after a complete brake job that's why I'm stumped. Let's say that my calipers don't need a rebuild; is it possible that there is an axle related problem such as out of spec c clip wear? My differential is kind of a piece, have to keep an eye on the lube level since I have a bad forward seal at the pinion... Just another thought... I wish I could find the time to look into all of this at home, can't find the time to. :/

After some tinkering today found the source of the noise for the squawk; the outer diameter of the right rotor makes contact with the innermost section of the caliper mount. I'm going to find out why; its one of two things, either the axle retainers are giving explains the 1/8th" end play. The other possibility is a bent backing plate that the caliper mount bolts to, difficult to tell still...

Any one have experience with c clips going south? This is on an original factory rear,**maybe** had a rebuild in the past, 130K miles....

Well got the carrier all taken apart, its nice and healthy, at least thats a plus

The axle retainers look pretty worn... A lot of wear through the three layers of whatever metals they use (looks like copper, steel and zinc maybe?)
They are about 5/8ths the thickness of the retention slots cut into the axle.
The barrier post has visible wear as well, but the micrometer says its ok.

So... shims at the retainers? Wider retainers? Go buy a 12 bolt?

Any ideas/theories/plans for world domination welcome

              Thanks again
