  • 93 Tranny in a 95?

I think my transmission is dying on me. Above 3k RPM it emits a high pitched whine, I have to rip it out of gear sometimes, but my main concern is that it doesn't "grab" the way it should. It almost feels like my clutch is slipping, but only at certain times. Sometimes, the car takes off like a rocket, but most of the time it struggles up to speed. I punched it up to 3,500 RPM in 3rd, but I was only up to 45 MPH. It should have been doing around 60 MPH. I have a Ram clutch with less than 8k miles on it, so I don't think that's the problem. This car hasn't shifted right since day 1, so I think the transmission is throwing in the towel.

I know that the transmissions used in the '93 F- bodies had steeper gearing than my '95, so I figured that would be a nice option. What would I need to make them bolt up and run?

the M21 t-56 has a short 1st gear that was it i think, but check your hydraulics you might have a bad master/slave cylinder or line.

Master and slave are both new. Maybe a thousand miles more than the clutch. It's always been a little rough on the 1-2 shift, always pops me out of 2nd and has always been much notchier than any other t- 56 I've felt. A friend of mind had one in an '89 Camaro and that thing shifted beautifully. My neightbor had a '94 Formula and it felt smoother as well. Even my mechanic says it feels "gritty". He thinks it's the input shaft.

To my knowledge, the only real issue you'll deal with is the lack of CAGS in the 93 T-56s and possibly a difference in the speedo drive (not sure if the 93 uses a VSS or not). Everything else SHOULD be the same, but don't quote me on that. As far as gearing, I'd be careful. The 93s had 2 different ratios sets, both wider ratios than the 94-02 T-56s. Just for reference:

        93 with 2.73 gears - 3.36 2.07 1.35 1.00 0.80 0.62
        93 with 3.23 gears - 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 0.80 0.62

Note the different 1st and 3rd gears.

        94-02, 3.42 gears - 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 0.74 0.50

Note the tighter ratios for gears 1 - 4, lower 1st gear as well as steeper OD gears. While you will get a taller first gear, you'll possibly lose some gas mileage. Hope this helps.

93 has a lower torque capacity. VSS mechanism is different (speedo can be changed with gears), but not sure if the ourput signal is compatible.

Thanks guys. I still need to rule out whether or not it's my clutch. I think my clutch is shot, but I definitely think my tranny could use a rebuild or replacement.
