  • Smog nazis strike again

    So I failed smog...again. The only difference between this and last time is my tune and a new O2 sensor. Here's the differences between the old and new tune:
    CAT OverTemp
    Target AFR
    new = 14.7, old = 12.2
    Minimum Coolant temp
    new = 151.2, old = 85.25

    Fuel
    Injector size
    new = 34.963, old = 39.841

    Open loop afr vs load vs cool temp
    new = 9.5, old = 8.3
    new = 15.8, old = 14.6
    (whole chart changed but that's just an example of the # differences)

    Chassis
    Hysteresis
    new = 7, old = 5

    So, will these items hurt the smog numbers?

    Here are the new smog numbers (btw, the smog nazis changed the max limits so now if I get to my previous #s, I'll barely pass, unlike before, when I passed easily)

    15 mph: HC: 68 (max 58), CO% 0.20 (max 0.34), NO 693 (max 483), CO2% 14.01, O2% 1.10.
    25 mph: HC: 63 (max 34), CO% 0.13 (max 0.32), NO 586 (max 494), CO2% 14.01, O2% 1.02.

    Old numbers:
    15 mph (1794 RPM)
    CO2%: 14.2
    O2%: 1.07
    HC max: 83
    HC ave: 21
    HC measured: 28
    CO max: 0.48
    CO ave: 0.06
    CO measured: .12
    NO (PPM) max: 689
    NO ave: 150
    NO measured: 410

    25 mph (1740 RPM)
    CO%: 14.1
    O2%: 1.10
    HC max: 48
    HC ave: 13
    HC measured: 33
    CO max: 0.46
    CO ave: 0.05
    CO measured: 0.12
    NO (PPM) max: 706
    NO ave: 136
    NO measured: 353

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    I think I remember talking about this with you last year...
    I think you need to be a bit clever(not too clever unless you like fines) passing the smog. You might need to run a program that is made just for you to pass the sniffer. No it's not ethical, but most unethical remedies take the cake in a squeeze. I would try leaning it out a bit more and pull some timing, just keep in mind the dynamics of your cumbustion circumstance to keep your experimentation in a safe range.

      Thanks - I did already change it to last year's smog tune and will try again on Friday. I'll drive it a bit to get the BLMs settled. If that doesn't pass, then my only option is to do as you say with the tune, or to get an AFR on a dyno for part throttle. Otherwise, I guess I can go illegal and pay someone to pass it.

      On another note, the beautiful hippy liberal state of CA only changed smog #s for '93-'95 LT1 automatics. The M6s remained the same as before. With the smog #s cut for the LT1, it's now easier for a 2007 Camry, Corolla, Lexus IS 250, Pontiac G6, LS1, LS2, etc to pass. Their allowables are higher for the exact same circumstances. I just don't get it. Someone either made a mistake or is trying to scrap all automatic LT1s. I wish I knew who it was.

        all vehicles have to go through the sniffer out there, even the new models? Jeez in Chicago only obd2 has to undergo a quick data conversation, obd1 doesn't even get called in anymore...
        Are getting sniffed and your PCM read at ge same time? You still might get past it if they don't tAke realtime readings of PCM switch status etc....

        Goodluck I'm sure you'll get it to pass

          New cars have a smog exemption for the first 6 years. So I guess 2005s will be coming up on their first checks in a couple months.

          The good thing about OBD1 tests is that there is no PCM connection with them - only a visual inspection and the sniffer. The bad thing is that it's such a long process to get it smogged because when I flash the PCM, I have to drive it for a while to set the BLMs, then take it in, pay another $40, get the readings, do it all over again. I'm not great with LT1 edit either, so I'm not even sure how much I can lean it out without increasing NOx. I guess the new program will tell how it's doing.

          So here's a comparison of a 94 automatic LT1 versus newer car allowable emissions:
