since ur in NY..you are much better off with the Firestones. they outperform the kdw's in winter conditions, rain, ice, and snow. and they do dahm good on dry pavement too.

Firehawks are a summer tire. While they're great with the wet I wouldn't use them in the snow/slush/ice. I have them on my car now, but when the bad weather comes I'm swapping them out for Bridgestone Blizzaks 225 width.

Im a tire engineer friend. Have been for 26yrs. i did all the govt. qualification testing up till 96. Ken Ball, Sr. Engineer at BS-FS is good friend of mine. the Firehawk Sz50 was designed at first to run at Indy......in the rain. that tread pattern and casing/belt configuration evolved into the current firehawk sv50 line with the addition of being able to perform in light snow and slush and ice..

my wife got caught in a hellacious snow storm 4 yrs ago in her Firehawk.... she made it home on sz50's. for fun...i tried to back the CompTA out of the garage with the compta Zr's on it.....to show her what saved her... i couldnt get 4 feet. the sz's are not a "summer tire" they are an all season high performance tire.

what you are proposing in going with a snow tire.....and if you are running 225's..... you best run them in the 55 or 60 aspect ratio on a 7" or 6.5" rim. the traction in snow comes from foot print.. the longer the footprint..the better. if you run the same aspect ratio not only do you spread the casing walls beyond manufacture's recommendations..but you still dont get the needed traction to perform under the best conditions ....heavy snow.

i never thought this broh's intention was to turn his car into a "snow driver". if he wants performance...and must live with "making in home if i get caught when its snowing"...ie: leave early from work....then the Firestone SZ50 is the ticket.

want snow tires....yes.....the B's are best. on seperate rims.... and take it easy on corners.......

          Ken,

I know you know your thing with tires. I was under the impression of SZ50 being a summer tire because Tire Rack advertises it as a "Ultra High Performance Summer Tire". If it's ok in light snow than all the better.

As for the Blizzaks, I was mistaken. I have 215/60's. They're mounted to an extra set of wheels ready to go.

Some of the Blizzaks have a "hydrophilic" multi-cell tread compound for about 50% of the original tread depth. This, along with a gazillion sipes, is intended to enhance the wet/ice grip. It works. I ran a set of four of the 225/55-16 Blizzak W15's (I think they are now the WS-50) on a set of salad shooters, and the wet/snow/ice traction was a major improvement over the OEM Goodyear GS-C's. However, the Blizzaks had somewhere between "0" and "" on dry traction. Try to pull hard off a stop light on dry pavement, and mom 'n pop in their Buick will laugh their a$$ off as they leave you sitting there spinning away..... .

Also looked wierd with those skinny tires on (ughhhhh) Z28 salad shooters, on a Formula.

Hey - If your interested, I have a couple of extra sets of rims with tires on them already. One set is off a friends 93 T/A with decent tires. I also have a set of Pontiac 5 spokes with snows with 2 winters on them. My wife used to run themon her 97 Firebird in the winter. Now that she has the 2002 firebird, I picked her up a winter car. I'm just south of Rochester in the Rush, ny area. Let me know if your interested.

i dont intend on using it as a winter driver, but my dads winter car was a 96 blazer that he just sold. and i was driving my moms old lumina. but since dads car is gone he is driving that now and my mom is drivin her vehicle. but i have the intelegence to know when i definatley shouldnt be driving but im just looking for something that will help me out a bit because where i live even if it hasnt snowed in a few days, because there are alot of open areas , snow tends to get blown on the road and i want somethng that will be able to get through that beter than what i have. im obviously not going to be driving it if its snowing with any decent acumulation because i dont realy want to die.
