17X8.5 vs 9.5

I can get a pretty good deal on some wheels but they are 8.5's. Can I put 40/275's or 285's on these or should I just hold out for for 9.5's?

285s are a hair too wide for 8.5s. Hold out for 9.5s, you won't regret it.
