  • What would this do???w/in

    Hi all,
What would happen if I went from 275/40/17's to 245/40/17's.
Still looking to save money on tires.

    Thanks all,

      Bah?????

I can't tell you exactly what it would do, but why oh why oh why..... ?

You would probably get better snow traction, but that is the only thing that I could see improving...

As far as saving money on tires, I don't really know how much you will save since it would probably become REAL easy to light those tires up since they are so much more narrow. You'd probably burn through the set fast enough to offset the cost difference, lol...

When I was in a pinch, I bought Pep Boys futura ultra Zs. Fairly inexpensive, gave decent traction and wore like iron. I got 40K miles out of a set. If I remember correct, about $130 per tire. you could do alot worse. These are made by Cooper for Pep Boys. Of course, now that things are returning to normal, its SZ50s for me!

why the h#ll is it....everyone wants to "save money on tires".....my God folks!! do you realize that the tire is the final link.....the most important link of your total suspension package affecting how the car will ultimately handle?

you spend 30grand plus on a car then buy cheap undersized tires...........come on.

first off..you will spread the cord body beyond the manuf.'s recommendations by 1/2"..tolerance is .05". design rim width for the 245 is 8.50". second off....you WONT get better snow traction..the foot print is not as long ..and thats what gives snow traction. third off: you reduce your cornering ability significantly due to the load range carrying characteristics of the 245 vs the 275 40r17....... you might even exsperience crown edge roll over in hard turns....

its like going to Sak's 5th AVe. and buying a suit...........

then going to WalMart and buying a tie to go with it..........

I hear that wolf man, tires are one area that you should not let price be the basis of your decision. specially whith the power our cars have.

I have only one rule when it comes to cars.

NEVER, EVER, CUT CORNERS ON TIRES OR BRAKES.

They are the only thing holding you to the road. Save money some where else.

Or sell me your Firehawk rims and I'll give ya a set of 16's with a good set of tires already on them. He He.

                Good graceous Gentlemen

Just a question. Wow Ken don't have a heart attack man. Just a thought that came to mind. I am practicly (pardon spell) broke as it is. I am still layedoff from my job. Bills have pilled up. Divorce almost finished.
Wondering how I am going to pay bills and my Hawk payments.
I wasn't planning on a layoff in a year of buying the Hawk. Child
support payments, etc. Personnal pitty party.
Some of ya guys know what I am talking about. That is why I asked the pros here on the board before I would have foolishly
                acted on doing that.

                Thanks to all,

Sorry about the hardship my man, maybe you should go with Joe's recommendation on the tires. I put ZR Dunlop 5000s on Big Mama's car and they have held up great, excellent in the rain, maybe these will save ya a few bucks. tirerack.com

                    A couple thoughts....

The 245/40-17 will be 1" smaller in diameter than the stock tire. Your speedo will read higher than actual speed, and you will run up more miles on the odometer than you are actually driving, depreciating your car faster. The car will lose 1/2" ground clearance, and the already too large gap between the fender and the tire will grow by 1/2"

You will be saving very little $$$$$. Tire Rack has some Sumitomo 245/40's for $96 each, and 275/40's for $104 each. Only $8 per tire. Same with Kumho's... $98 vs. $107.

I would not cut corners (pun not intended) on tires. I would not give up the looks and handling for $32. I probably wouldn't buy Sumitomo's or Kumho's, but as long as you recognize that they are not going to offer the same performance as the top-of-the-line BFG's, GY's, 'stones, etc, you will be OK.

                    Sumitomo recommends 8.0 - 9.5" rims for the 245's.
