    Hello f-body enthusiast's!

    This is my first post and will be the first of many questions that I'll have. I've had many nice old chevy's in the past but my 97 SS is by far my favorite. I have a few minor add ons I'd like to add to the car.

    1. a better air filter. I've read where the K&N does not fit real well so I'm probably going to go with a Holley PowerShot 221-5. Any suggestions?

    2. Was thinking about replacing the MAF with a Granatelli (big $$) or remove the screens in the stock MAF. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance! Looking forward to learning more about my 4th GEN Camaro.

    nice looking ride.
    although i have no experiance with an SS air box, my K&N fit fine in my 94 Z.

    as far as the maf goes i have a much cheaper way to get eth same results as any aftermarket one.

    you need to have a die grinder and a carbide bit. take the MAF out, and take it apart (4 torx bit screws)

    then pop out the screen

    next take a hack saw or some other cutting impliment and cut the "blades" out of each half of the sensor body.

    take your die grinder and smooth out the parts you just cut off so they are nice and flush with the rest of the maf body

    then you can do one of two things, put it together and leave the plastic tabs that stabalize the sensor, or cut them off

      K&N does not make a filter for our airboxes. Get that Holley.

        The stock MAF sensor is no obstruction at all. Replacing it with a $300 "recalibrated" unit is a huge waste of money. Hacking the stocker up is also a high risk procedure. 1/3 of the people get near-miraculous SOTP improvements that they can not seem to document with dyno or track numbers, 1/3 feel no difference, and the other 1/3 encounter problems with surging, reduced mileage, screwed up long term fuel multipliers, etc. This is based on helping literally dozens of people who send me their scanner data logs in the hope that I can help them track down problems.

        Unless you are putting down 500+HP, leave the MAF alone. If you absolutely must spend $$$, get a Z06 sensor that has been recalibrated for the LT1.... less than 1/2 the cost of the Granatelli.

          Thanks Fred. Thats the kind of info I'm looking for. I'll save the $300 and put it towards 3:73 gears.....

            why not 4:10's?..... unless you plan on going with turbo's or super charger, 4:10's is the best rear gear combo for NA'd LT1's..........

            i have em. luv em.

                Little off topic, and sorry for that.. But what is your engine RPM's in 6th gear at say 80mph with the 4.10 gears?

                I was thinking of going 3.73 with my M6, just because I don't want it revving high, but everyone seems to still suggest 4.10s.

                thanks

                      With a 1994-2002 T56, in 6th gear:

                      MPH--> 60 - - 80 - - 100
                      ===================
                      3.42 - 1,370 - 1,825 - 2,280
                      3.73 - 1,500 - 1,990 - 2,490
                      4.10 - 1,640 - 2,190 - 2,735

                      Think of it this way.... going from 3.42's to 3.73 will increase your rear wheel torque ROUGHLY 10%, and will increase your RPM at any speed by 10% (actual number is 9.06%, but lets keep it simple). Going from 3.42's to 4.10's will increase your rear wheel torque by ROUGHLY 20%, and increase your RPM at any speed by 20%.

                      I ran 3.73's with the T56 for a while, and they provided a nice balance. Never tried the 4.10s with the T56, but I have 4.10's with my TH400/Gear Vendor O/D and they are pretty impressive.
