  • 1994 TransAm Engine Codes

I'm having trouble reading the codes from my 1994 25th Anniversary TransAm. It has a 12 pin ALDL connector, but shorting pins A & B results in the colling fan running, but no service engine soon flashes. I've been told this car has the OBD2 computer but an OBD1 connector. Anybody know if there is an adaptor available that will aloow me to use an OBD2 code reader with this car?

    A lot of bad info.

ONLY the 1993's can be flashed with the "short the pins" trick... does NOT work on 94 and up.

    1994 has a 12-pin (OBD-I) ALDL connector, and an OBD-I computer.

It is the 1995 that has a 16-pin (OBD-II) ALDL connector and an OBD-I computer.

Only the 1996 and up models have the OBD-II computer.

You need to use an OBD-I scanner with an OBD-I connector. I can give you a list of the hardware and software scanners that will work on your car.

    The short list:

    Hardware:
    -AutoXray
    -ScanMaster

    Software:
    -Diacom
    -TTS DataMaster
-FreeScan (yes it really is "free").

Injuneer: Thanks for the info. This is what I've been looking for for months now. I downloaded the FreeScan software and I've got the MAX232 interface 3/4s built. Should be done tomorrow and I'll let you know how I make out.
The car will run perfect for about 15 minutes, then it starts to miss and will eventually stall out. If I try to restart it, it'll turn over but stop abruptly with a thud. It'll do this repeatedly at this point. If I let the car sit for a couple of hours, it'll start and run for 15 minutes then repeat the above problem. During the time that it is running rough it has a really strong 'rotten egg' smell.
      I'm hoping
I'm hoping that reading the codes will point me in the right direction.

      Thanks
