    This site rocks!

What can I expect to pay for labor to install 4:10 gears on my '97 SS? I currently have 3:42's. If anyone can point me in the direction of a reputable installer in the Rockford/Chicago/ Madison area it would be much appreciated.

My father just quoted a guy the other day on a 98 SS. The labor was around 450. With the price of the gears, install kit, fluid and the reprogramming, the total job was around 900.

Check out ls1 speed in naperville. I have a 95 z-28 and they quoted me 250 to install 3.73s. They said that they would do a speedo recal for free to. i purchased the parts before hand though.

Bought mine from Mike at Stealth Performance, paid about 300 for the install, all total less than 600.

I've seen quotes ranging anywhere from $150 - $350, assuming you bring your own gears and install kit. $150 seems exceptionally low, but someone just posted that price an another bulletin board as what they paid for a successgul (no whine) install.

Wow! I dont know where you guys are getting your quotes. Around here (Syracuse, NY) there are only 2 shops that will do them. 350 sounds reasonable, especially if there is a lot of competition for the job, but anythng lower and there is no way they are doing the job right. I would never do an install for that kind of money. If its JUST swapping the gears - maybe. But, if you set up a rear like your supposed to, you change the bearings, seals, clutches etc. If your swapping gears, youre pressing the bearings off at least the pinion. I always do all the bearings. Pinion depth needs to be measured, backlash, and preload. This isnt a 5 minute operation. Could you slam gears into the housing in an hour or two? Sure, but is that what you want? If your lucky, they wont whine (too much backlash), but you wont know that you have too little until they break.

I paid around $150 for labor including replacing all the bearings, etc. It was all done to the specs recommended by the gear manufacturer. However, it was basically a one man local shop (with a knowledgeable owner/mechanic) and I let him have the car for several days to do in his spare time. He's one of the only people I trust to work on my car.

Of course this doesn't help much unless you want to drive to Western PA!

I was quoted $250 to rebuild my rear and weld the axle tubes. I supplied all the parts.

It is going to be done by the same guy that assembled and swapped the 383 in my wife's car.

Just haven't had the time to do it. But again, not much hepl to you because I am in Cincy, OH.
