  • Y and Off Road pipes

What is the difference between "Y" and "Off Road" pipes? My '97 SS currently has the stock exhaust with the TOTL tailpipes. I plan on adding headers next winter but for now would like to replace the section between the exhaust manifolds and the muffler; and would like to not reinstall the cats because we don't get emission tested here. Is there something out there that after installing it I could add the headers next winter that would bolt directly to it? From reading other posts I think I need to buy 02 simulators also so the SES light doesn't go on.

An off road pipe is the same configuration as the stock type Y pipe, but no provisions for cats, hence for "off road" use only.
Shorty headers are the only thing that may bolt in place of the manifolds without having to go with an entirely different Y pipe. Also, don't be suprised if you delete the cats a new program is in order. Often times the lack of back pressure due to an off road pipe triggers a low EGR flow and sets a SES light. A new program with an EGR delete will cure that.

Won't the 02 simulator take care of the catalytic converter removal??

Simply replacing the Y pipe will cause a code for the 02s and most likely a code for the EGR. The 02 simms will keep the 02 code from popping up, but not the EGR.

          Joe,

Thanks for the info; btw your 97 looks awesome; almost bought one of those instead of my SS.

I currently have the car programmed by a Hypertech programmer; will an EGR delete screw this programming up?

Yep. you'll have to unprogram the HPP, put the car to stock and get a custom program from someone like Ed Wright at fastchips or pcmforless.com Those are just a few of the people who do programs.

Go with a program from F.A.S.T chips is what I would recommend.
That will take care of the EGR and the 02 Sensors.
