  • Help on performance modding...

    Hey guys,

My friend has got a 2000 NHRA TA, Automatic.

I'm really curious what he can do for launching and 1/4 mile performance gains... starting with the "most bang for the buck" mods. Especially information on how much the mod costs (parts), a rough estimated hp/'feel' gains.

Likewise, is there a specific or suggested "mod path" to follow? I know in some of the imports, there is something of an order to follow. Any tuner forums or f-body sites that I should know about to get info on upgrades?

    Thanks guys!

I'm no guru, but "more air"="more power". Clean up the air path, with an air lid and highflow filter...along with exhuast (Cat-back, with 3" piping). It's not costly and makes a world of difference...at least for me. Check my signature...other mods are based on preference and $$$. I'm done with intake and exhuast, next on my list - suspension (I gotta tighen her up).

If I got a penny everytime this question came up...I'd be able to buy Ken's Comp TA...LoL

Do a search bro...(it's the botton in the top right corner, next to home.)

      LS1 Power Gains

Too keep it simple and cheap, go with a Whisper airbox lid,
high-flow bellows boot, K&N filter, 3" Exhaust and don't forget
the gears, preferably 4.10:1 ratio. These mods 'will' improve
      your acceleration.

Ok, obviously his gearing is all wrong for dragging. How much would it cost to rework that? He refuses to go manual.

Also, would just opening up the airbox (I assume that's what you are talking about) provide as much airflow as like a K&N FIPK? I know that the FIPK or other open-air filter is almost a must on DSM's (my limited knowledge is in those). Is there a reason (maybe $$$?) to keep the airbox?

        Thanks man.

Hey, can you give me like super ballpark figures he could expect? He is resisting modding right now, but I'm trying to convince him to start with some free/cheap mods that he'll feel gains from (or at least change his exhaust/engine tone... he isnt 100% happy with that).

        Appreciate any help!

Around here in the San Antonio area it would cost approx. $175-$200 plus the price of the ring and pinion (about $200). So $400 out the door. "Free mods" would be throttle body coolant bypass, remove screen from the MAF for starters.

fastTA, I don't mean to sound like a [ EDIT ] (especially since I don't even know you), but are you really hunting for 9's (or even low 10's) with "just" the mods you've listed??? Don't get me wrong, your list is very impressive, but I would have figured you'd need a supercharger, turbo or NOx to run 9's...(but then again, my last vehicle was a 4,900lb Lightning that ran a 12.9).

            I'm seriously curious.

            Thanks.

Joe Overton's LT1 T/A has run 9.87@133mph on pure motor.

I am making 607 dyno proven flywheel horsepower naturally aspirated on a car that weighs 3120 lbs with me in it, and I weigh 190! Factor in 28x10.5 MT drags and an additional 200 shot of N20 and I think 9's are shakin' in their boots. Like the Injuneer has said, many f-bodies are getting into the 9's on all motor given sufficient weight reduction. But who knows I am just being optimistic, the car will be ready in about 5-6 weeks and I will let you know

Here are a few F-bods goin' the distance:

Sorry about the language and if I offended anyone (wasn't intentional), and thanks for the links.

True 9's on pure motor is impressive...with a 200-shot of NOx I can't imagine it will be much of a problem.

                  Thanks.
