  • What kinds of aftermarket radio head unit is everyone using?

I am looking to upgrade my stereo head unit, but I want to match my orange/amber lights in my Trans-Am (1995).

The Pioneer 1.5 din units would be ideal, but the green lights( with my (orange interior lights) would screwup the looks of the dash at night, in my opinion.

The Alpine Din 1.5 Units were perfect but they are not made anymore and a far and few between on EBAY.

What have you found that looks good in a Firebird and am I being to picky about the light matching in my dash?

My stock unit CD skips horribly even after repair...It time for a new unit..

    Thanks.

I have pioneer with the green lights. Never really stuck out to me, but I'm not that picky on that sort of thing.

I agree. I am not replacing the head unit until I find something that will compliment the red backlighting color scheme.

Kenwood had a very nice one that I saw this past sumer. It had several different options for backlighting, and the "Mars Red" one looked like a perfect match. It also looked like it might be close to the size of the stock unit... another plus, because I absolutely hate the way most aftermarket units are extremely skinny. When they are installed, the cheap plastic casing around them looks, well... cheap.

I agree with you 100%. I want it to match the color scheme, and I also want it to fit properly.

Here is the unit I was referring to :

Remember, it has different color schemes built in, one is red.

Here are a couple more that look like they might be the right size... but I don't know about their color schemes.

Here is the general site for these three:

Those radios look like double din, not 1.5.

Hmm... I haven't looked into this enough yet, since I am not going to change that for a while.

I don't know what double din versus 1.5 means... ?

I have a Pioneer 1.5 DIN and I love it. I could care less about the color matching thing. If it really bothers you, switch out to blue or green bulbs in the factory locations and the problem is solved. I wanted a radio that was direct fit, had great sound, and a ton of adjustablity, and the 77 did the trick. Then I got the 50 disc and the voice activation, and everything has been roses since then.

The Kenwood is a double din and will NOT fit in a 4th gen without significant modification (that reads: chopping the heck out of your dash). If you want the Alpine, one of our members at www.gcfba.org has one for sale at a very low price. Go to our forums and click on the for sale section.

I have the same pioneer in my Blazer. It's OK.

double din fits mostly imports. It is twice the height as a regular stereo, like the ones you pictured

Crap. That really sucks for me, since one of the reasons why I bought a T/A over a Camaro was because I liked the Pontiac red lights at night, I prefer it to the greenish blue lights by quite a bit... oh well, I guess I will have to keep looking.

Theres a really nice sony that I plan to get my GF for Christmas for her Z. I currently have a pioneer with blue graphics, and it looks pretty cool. But I really think this new Sony would Look awesome in any f-bod! It has this one screen saver that has actual flames burning across the screen (TFT Color Display)

When I had my Formula, I had a nice Kenwood head unit who's lights switched between green & red.

Can't remember, but I know some kenwoods have that ability.

My Camaro now, doesn't have the red Pontiac lights, so I have a Kenwood MP8017 I think it is. It plays MP3 CD's.

I installed it myself, first time ever! I was proud of myself, and saved about $80.

Sony makes some that can change the color. It has red too. Not sure how well it compares with the interior lights.

Here's the info about the unit http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...s.jsp?cid=3616

They have several ones that are called CD receiver / changer controller

Was at some point thinking of getting a setup like that with a 10 disc changer that played mp3's. You would get approx. 7 GB of data in there and with an average of 70 mb of data in mp3 for a CD you would have 100 CD's at your fingertips.

Mine is just the single DIN, but the adapter plate makes it look real nice. I wouldnt bother knocking myself out to find a 1.5 DIN; just get an adaper plate.
