    I ended up buying 17X8.5's The deal was too good to pass up. Anyway, can I put 275's on an 8.5 or is that going to be too much?

    IMHO you should follow the tire manufacturer's recommendation for wheel width. Must manufacturers recommend a minimum 9" rim width for a 275/40-17. One exception is Dunlop, which reccomends an 8.5" minimum width on some of their tires in that size.
