  • is this good dyno reading for stock

    i have a dyno reading of 231hp/239ftlb is this about a normal dyno reading for a 94 firebirb formula?
    my roomate keeps laughing at me cause he beat me up in his 89 ford mustang lx 5.0 but his aint stock hes got a racing tranny and i have an automatic . he has 3.73 gears and i have stock gears he has a mac exhaust cat back system with prochamber free flow cat he has a cold air intake and mass air meter and a 35mm throttle body. and he didnt run away from me he just walked on me. i guess what i am saying can anyone help me beat him he owns his own speedshop called holeshot inc. and mostly what they work on there is mustangs. i am just tired of dealing with all this running at the mouth bad mouthing gm's.
    what should i do for 1000$ to get the most out of an lt1 thats all i have right now any one got any good used parts to sell?
    i already told him he may win but i will look better coming accross the line cause i wont be driving a souped up escort and mine is a sleek mean mustang killing machine.

    I'm kinda partial, but I say nitrous. Plus you'll still have enough money left over to get a torque convertor, and if you stretch that money out real far, you can get gears as well. The gears and torque convertor would whoop him, but nitrous would put him on the trailer. With a good installer putting in your nitrous kit, you could do all of that and everybody would think it is still stock, even with the hood open.

    I put down 270 NA RWHP in a 96 WS6 6-speed with a K&N and a pulley. Nitrous jumped that up to 370, and 454 ft/lbs of torque.

      If you are looking for street performance to use regularily I would avoid nitrous. You will get tired of filling the bottle, plus it is hard on your engine.

      I would get a SLP loudmouth catback, a 3.72 rear gear and a K&N FIPK intake kit. That should come to about a grand.

      Those 3 things, along with some "free" mods, like disconnecting the TB coolant and bypassing the IAT sensor should have you at least keeping up with your friend.

          NOS, if installed properly will not destroy the motor, but it will shorten its lifespan. Just like a supercharger does... I've heard of paxton equipped z's need ing rebuilds after 75K. NOS would probably be even harder on it.

            Nitrous is perfectly safe as long as your not running lean. Biggest bang for the bucK! Look into the TNT kit; I love mine. Piece of cake to install, and its a real kick in the pants!

              I ran an NOS 5176 dry kit (125-150HP) on my 94 Formula from 1995 through 1999. When I pulled the engine at 67K miles for the stroker buildup, it was just like new. Ran perfect, all the parts were in excellent condition. All bearings showed negligible wear. Nitrous, used reasonably, and with the correct tune is not an automatic death sentence for the LT1.

                  I listened to Injuneer on mine, so I know it's installed right. Plus you can pop the hood and not see anything. Nitrous is easier on the motor than a supercharger, the supercharger is always demanding from the motor and on the gas is stressing the motor. Nitrous is only used when you need it. Turbos are the best way if you can afford it, and if you can stand the lag.

                  I'm glad to see you post that rebuild info, Injuneer. I've had mine on for about 25k miles now, and run synthetic oil, so your experiences make me happy knowing I won't find chunks in my block whenever I pull it out at 300k miles

                  All the horror stories you've heard about nitrous is due to three things:

                  Incorrect installation
                  Improper tuning
                  Lack of system maintenance

                  Get all the safety stuff and install it safely, make sure you get the jets right for the shot you are spraying, and rebuild or replace your solenoids per your kit makers recommendations. Which is better, spending an extra $100 on parts, or a $2,000 motor?
