  • Anyone MAKE a cold air intake for their LT1?

I'm not really about to spend $200 again on a pipe and an air filter cone..

Anyone know the best way to make one? I was thinking 3" ABS plastic pipe, a 90* elbow, and more 3" down, then a K&N cone filter?

Anyone know of a site with measurements or part #'s or anything at all that may help me in building?

    Thanks

You are kidding, right? You wouldn't seriously use PVC plumbing pipe under the hood of your Camaro, would you? You could cut a hole in the hood with a jigsaw and bolt a mailbox to it for a hoodscoop too while you are at it. Sorry I'm a smartass

I would spend the money and get some OEM quality parts and do it right. Or... I wouldn't do it. My father "riggs" stuff like that, I cannot stand it!!

    To each his own!

No, I wouldn't use PVC. That gives off toxic fumes if it gets too hot. I'd use ABS

And why not?! What is a cold air intake other than a cone filter, and a pipe to go to the throttle body? What is the $200 spent on?!?

I can make one for $50 including the filter.

If you have ABS brakes, you won't be able to get a 3 inch pipe between the ABs pump and the radiator. This is the trick. The K&N and Moroso use a plastic housing that they squish to go between them. The SLP reduce their pipe from 1 larger one to 2 smaller ones to do it.

If I had to do it over again, I might do the SLP instead of the Moroso. I had to cut about a half inch off of it on the MAF end to get it to fit. I would just rather see the SLP one go from 1 larger one to 2 smaller ones back to one larger one with 1 large filter rather than 2 smaller one.

I seem to remember a part called " slick air tube" and almost the same version that was sold by JET that was a solid tube with no squash in it. They would (just barely) clear the brake unit. It was the same ID as the inlet diameter of the factory tube, just didn't flair out and squash in around the brake unit. It was a roto molded plastic part that replaced the factory tube and allowed you to use either the factory airbox or a K&N cone filter. There must be one of those around somewhere.

What about just taking a K&N flat drop-in filter, and dropping that in my airbox, then hacking the aibox bottom so the filter is exposed?

That would DEFINATELY free it up, and be very cheap to do. The intake air won't be as cool as it would from a CAI setup, but how big of a difference would that make?

yeah, i'm cheap. I have a lot of expensive hobbies!

Not sure if it is any good. Anybody?

In keeping with the hacked airbox idea, what would keep you from making a small ram air scoop, cutting a hole in the bottom panel and using some flex ducting to bring the outside air up to the airbox? Seems to me there are a few compainies out there that sell just such a kit.

That is exactly what is in my car. K&N with a cut open box. I didn't notice a SOTP difference, but it sounds really nice. I'm sure it helped performance, even if I cannot feel it myself.

The biggest restriction in the stock air system is the squish between the MAF and the air filter to clear the ABS pump. Unless you can get rid of that, there isn't going to be a gain.

A single 2.5" pipe isn't going to be any better than the stock plastic housing.

I kind of figured that. An ultra-Z hood with ramair is on my wish list. After new rims and a Borla catback.
