I replacing the fuel lines on 76 malibu. My question is the return line from the pump does gas flow back to the tank or only air ???

If the fuel pump bolted to the engine block has 2 nipples on it, then the smaller one is a return, and fuel DOES go through it.
Long ago there were some pumps with only one nipple and no return line. Those systems had a supply line only.

76 eh? I've got a host of mid 70s Chevelles. Lagunas, specifically. I've got a 74, 75, two 76's. Love those Nascar front ends.
I even put a sloped nose from a 76 on a 73 Elcamino.
