getting bigger tires

When I bought my car it had 16" kumho 245/50/ZR16's on them. I have ordered new tires and rims. The new tires are kumho 275/40/WR17's.

I was talking with a friend, and he said that because my car's "stock" tires were 245's, but I am now putting 275's on, that my tires are going to stick out from the side of the car, mexi-style, because my new tires are so much wider than my stock tires. is this true? and if so what do I have to do to NOT have it do this? My new rims are 17x9.

assuming you ordered the proper offset (~56mm) on your new rims, your buddy is wrong.

GM didn't make 2 different size fenders (inner and outer) or rear ends for a car with 16" or 17" wheels. If you got the correct backspacing, they will fit fine. I don't know the measurements. I'm sure someone will post the numbers.

the rims i ordered have a 56mm offset, are 17" x 8.5", and have a 5 lug, 4-3/4" lug pattern, and the tires as I said are 275/40/wr17's. So I'm cool as far as the wheels fitting on the rims, and then the rims+wheels fitting on the axle, as well as fitting in the wheel well?

and not that this matters, but the kid I was arguing with... he drives a 300zx. lol. and its not even a TT. I think he's just coming up with stuff cause he's jealous or something.

It will all fit. I would had ordered 17x9 or 17x9.5, but the 8.5 will do.

Most tire manufacturers recommend a minimum rim width of 9.0" for a 275/40-17. The main exception is Dunlop, which will accept an 8.5" rim width. In any case, the rims should have been 9.0" or 9.5" wide. The wide tires may look "scrunched" on the narrow rims.

Your offset is fine.... stock 16x8 wheels are 55mm offset. Stock 17x9 wheels (SS/WS6) are 55mm offset. Your 8.5's being in the middle will be fine.

Stereotypes are valid when empirical statistics are there to back them up. If 100% of the people I've ever seen with their tires sticking 3" outside their wheel wells appeared to be of spanish or mexican descent, then its not an inappropriate stereotype. Most truck drivers are men. Old people like cadallacs. Asian people like japanese cars. I don't like either; that doesn't mean I'm hating on the old people or the asian people by saying it, it just means I don't like that particular style, but they do. Nothing wrong with that.

Again, let me reiterate that I have nothing against them for having their tires the way they do, its just something that seems to be limited to their culture. It's okay to be different! We have some guys from Mexico who post here once in a while, but they are regular guys and probably have seen plenty of lowriders with the Volkswagen tires sticking out, stupid style, and, yeah, it seems to be part of their culture, but I doubt they get offended that easy. As with every single absolute in the universe... there are exceptions. Car enthusiasts would be your exception as far as the "Cadillacs" go. So you're right, I shouldn't have said "Old people like cadillacs". Instead, let me rephrase that to "People who drive cadillacs are old." Or black. Escalades come to mind.
