  • Ram Air Hood Screens

I'm adding a used Ram Air hood to my T/A. I will have it painted black like the rest of the car.

I pulled the two screens out from the two air scoops. They are in decent shape with one of them missing one of the four mounting "thingis" and the paint is a little faded.

I looked up on the GM parts sites and they cost about a 100 bucks.

Are there any other sources to get them from (aftermarket) or does anybody have made some cool ones that look really hot (stainless steel, crome,......)?

What would you paint them with a black car?

      Rene,

are you getting your hood painted at a local body shop? If so, tell them to cut out the water baffles. My brother had his cut out on his '97 Formula to improve more airflow since the water baffles restrict it. He sold me his hood to me after he got rid of his Formula for a ZR-1. Don't worry when it rains nothing happens. I've had mine like that for years never had a problem.

By the way, I used a chrome aluminum spray enamel for my screens. It gives it a shiny chrome look to it. Wolfman told me about it awhile ago, thanks for the tip, Wolfman!

Love those wheels of yours. That picture shows them much better then the one in your signature.

Nope... those are Borbet Type M. Doubtful you're going to find any of those, they were discontinued a couple of years ago.

I have red ram air grilles, I used the same bright red ceramic paint that I used for my brake calipers and intake. I really like it on a black car, but I also think that silver would look great especially if you don't have some other red accents.

Here's a couple of close-up's I just ran out and shot, they also show where I drilled my baffles, normally you don't see the baffle holes this much, but the camera flash really lit up the inside...guess I need to shoot some flat black in there . (P.S. it's just started to rain here )

They look kindof mean/evil under normal lighting.

**-** BOOST, it's no replacement for displacement, and there's definitely no replacement for having both!

Thanks for the pics. I've seen some red ones before on a web site and kind of liked them. I'm also leaning towards red accents at the moment.

So you just drilled some holes throught he baffles or did you cut it like DJ Taso has on his hood (square)?

I couldn't come up with a good way to cut them out, so I just drilled a bunch of random holes.

i drilled holes back in 97...one of the first to do it. it maintains the structure of the baffles. and allows you to put masking tape over them if you get caught in a nasty rain storm sometime....puts it back to stock..then pull the plugs out of the rain drains under the hood. i used brake drum plugs, had to shave the stems down..but they work great as plugs.

my screens are chrome aluminum painted and trimed in black on the outter edges. for the Comp TA. the screens in the Hawk are solid chrome aluminum painted.

                            Thanks for your inputs guys

Anybody be kind enough to post a picture how the hood looks on the inside with the holes. I still have some problems envisioning the whole thing.

One more question though. Is plugging the rain drain holes part of the getting as much air as possible to the intake?

Interesting?? I have the baffles on mine cut out, but its a "track only" car at this point. I find that even when towing the car I have to block the openings to prevent water from getting into the air filter. If I don't put the foam plug into the back of the opening, there will be a lot of water on the filter, and that's just from towing the car on an open trailer. I suspect with your engine running, you don't notice the water buildup, becuase its getting pulled into the engine.

I leave the grilles out at the track. Personally, strictly MHO- anything other than black looks a little "ricey".... but that's just personal taste.
