  • nfb: free web hosting sites?

Does anyone know of any free web site hosting companies that are decent? (Preferably bannerless, but I doubt they would exist). I need to post my portfolio online. I've tried several already: netfirms, freewebpage.org, etc. but they all do the same thing...attach their banner tags at the beginning of all your files, including .doc files - which destroys the file format.
Also, preferably, the hosting plan would include access to a Perl interpreter and at least 1 FTP acct... but ...
I'm guessing there isn't a free host that would have these options...

    Thanks for any help.

Deal ends tomorrow, but for now 1and1.com, is offering free hosting for 3 years as a promo. no ads, no bs. prolly not as good as some others, but much better than the freebies out there. hth.

I am not sure what you mean... I believe that they allow anything that you can legally do with HTML. They are a full blown hosting provider that just happens to be free right now.

Thanks for the site Paul. I signed up because it was such a great deal. The only thing is that they don't give you a free subdomain to their domain...you either have to buy a domain for $5.99/year (still cheap), or stick with the domain they give you, which isn't too great. Mine is something like s94938520.onlinehome.us which isn't too easy to remember. Gotta rely on the bookmark for now.

Ken, I am pretty sure that they would allow hotlinking pics. As Paul has said, this is the $29 plan for free, and it really does come with lots of features. However, just to make sure, once my site is up, I'll let you know.

I found a free site that give you 20 mb of space, but they have banners at the top of the page. It really isn't that bad for a temporary place to post. Check out my site for a preview of what you can do. http://mcas7.tripod.com/cage.

            Just a suggestion.

Try a free redirecting service like this one here

                http://www.kickme.to/

You can then choose a name and like I use in my case it is

http://kickme.to/furter for my business related site.

Works pretty good. If you change your provider you can go to kickme.to an change the url. No need to update everybody.

Noticed that some Pirate and Porn sites use it so they can quickly change the url when a site is busted. Some companies with Cyberpatrol or similar may block the access to it due to that. It happened to mine with Uncle Sam at Tennesse Valley Auth. Only after sending a message to the admin that it was business related they lifted the block.

There's others I think like slingme.to or similar.

Yup, hotlinking has worked for me. As you can see, I was able to finally use a pic for this message forum!!

Thanks all for the quick replies and help. I would highly recommend 1and1.com's free 3 year service...you just can't beat it.

Black97, thanks for the info on the redirection...A long time ago, I had it on an old web site (come.to/...) and completely forgot about it. Those are always good. But, I am still tempted just to create my own domain though...only $6/year is really cheap. I recall years ago when it was $70 for 2 years.
