The Formula is lighter. It doesn't have the side skirting, the front fascia, or the high-profile spoiler... it also is available in clotch seats. Basically, it looks like a stock V6 Bird from outside, but it has the LS1 engine creeping underneath

I do like the way the Trans Am looks better though, but that's all personal preference.

The LS1 engine itself has so much variance in power output from car to car, that the difference from Formula to Trans Am really isn't noticebale. Some TAs will beat some Formulas, some Formulas will beat some TAs.

In 1998-2000 both cars were available with the WS6 option. In 2001, the WS6 option became Trans Am only.

Does it have the Trans Am uplevel spoiler? does it say "Formula" in raised letters on the sides of each door? Does it have the Trans Am front end (stacked fog/parking lights) or the formula front end (side by side fog/parking)?

You can't go by what your insurance says your car is, they dont really make any distinction between TA's, Formulas, WS6's, Firehawks, Lingenfelters, etc. To them, its just the 5.7 liter, 2 door coupe version of the (3.8l) firebird.

the registration for our Envoy's say "pick up truck".

the registration for my CompTA says trans am.
for the firehawk it says formula.
