I thought Pop, Soda, Coke...I thought they were all same??? I mean, they aren't...but it's all carbonated water with syrup right? Every manufacturer are their own...but it's basically the same to me...

That's the point...They are all the same. But people from different regions have different names for soda in general.
Example: Someone in the Northeast goes up to a counter and orders a "soda". Another person in the midwest would be more apt to order a "pop". Similarly in the south they would order a "coke". The meaning is the same though.Joe K.

Yea it's a habit to me. Usually what happens is I say "I'd like a Coke". They come back with "I'm sorry we only sell Pepsi" or "Is Pepsi OK?" My answer is "Better". He said he would say I'd like a pop and someone woud hit him. So he started calling it Soda. Kinda funny. That map is probably pretty accurate. I am from Syracuse, NY and I call it soda. I moved to rochester (about an hour west) and they call it pop here. If you look at the map, there is definately a division in the middle of the state of NY. Go to a grocery store in Lincoln, Nebraska, and buy a bottle of coke. They won't ask you if you want your coke in a bag--they ask if "you want your pop in the sack". I can't believe this was brought up, this is awesome! I've been debating this with people for the past 5 months or som since i'm in Iraq, and the general conlusion is that people from the north/north east call it pop more than any one else. A lot of people on the carolinas and virginias from what i have noticed call it coke. To me thats a brand, not a general summary of a drinnk. I argue this with my girlfriend all the time, and since we're both from rochester I can agree with that most people call it pop for some reason. I think it is soda. I've always argued that pop is a sound, or an action not a soft drink. Where as soda only has one meaning, i think it does anyway.
