  • Timing cover question

What's the trick to getting the timing cover off without ripping the pan gasket? It looks like it's loose from the pan but stuck to the timing cover.

Been a while since I've done a small-block timing cover, but if I recall correctly,.....

If you are not going to remove the oil pan, you're just going to have to rip the timing cover off, cut the gasketing flush with the front of the block, cut the new lower rubber gasket to fit flush with the front of the block ... and apply a 'blob" of silicone to the joint between the pan / block / cover before putting the cover on.

Pehaps one of the guys that have been into them more recently can verify ....or falsify .... my memory here.
