I read alot about cars having problems and smoking out the exhaust. My question is since all cars make exhaust how can you tell if its bad or not. Whats the differance between normal exhaust and "smoke".

normal exhaust is pretty much just clear gases that you can't really see.
smoke has particulate matter that either wasn't burned completely in the combustion process, or something else in the intake/compression/exhaust system is burning and putting smoke in there. You can see smoke.

Basically if you see black smoke, you're running rich. Blue smoke and you are burning oil. White smoke that lingers when the engine is warmed up, water or coolant is present in the combustion chamber when it fires. White smoke/steam can be seen on a cool morning when the engine is warming up. If it lingers or it's pretty warm out, it usually points to either a bad head gasket, intake gasket or perhaps a crack in a water jacket that leads to the intake tract. Ideally, gas and air in the proper mixture will produce mild vapors at best and not smoke. Sometimes a slightly rich mixture is programmed (or jetted) into the fuel system to help protect against lean out damage, but it still shouldn't blow black smoke unless it's pig rich.
