  • Oil Question???

    Here's some background...then the question.

    Took my car in to get an oil change last night (yeah, I'm lazy sometimes). Anyway, on the drive home I notice the engine is running really smooth. The normal exhaust noise is muffled. I'm like, "Wow, this is the smoothest I can remember this engine running!". Start it up this morning and no problems, it did seem to take the littlest bit more effort to turn over. It's a little chilly. Nothing that I really thought twice about though.

    I glance up and notice they put the oil reminder sticker on the windshield. I reach up to take it off and notice that it says 10W30 Mobil 1. I always get 5W30.

    Is it worth taking it back and having them put the correct oil in it? I mean is it going to make that much of a difference? I certainly never thought that kind of mistake would be noticable to the driver! I'm a little miffed they didn't do what I requested and then missed the numerous labels on the car. But I don't know if it's worth the price of the gas and the time to go back and have it done right.

    For the summer its probably ok to use 10W30. Its just that 5W-30 will give you more protection in low temps. but I would worry about it till fall.
    '95 Formula A4, 17"x9" wheels, F1 275/40-ZR17, TB bypass, 160 deg. TS, LS1 drive shaft, WS6 muffler, LCA, tie rod Soon to be LT4 heads intake and HOT cam.

        The only difference between those two grades is the ability of the oil to "flow" at 0degF. The 5W will flow better than the 10W at very low temperatures. Once the oil warms up to normal engine operating temperatures, there is no difference in the two.

        On a really cold day, just let it warm up for a minute extra, before you start to push it.

            You dont have 2 worry about it, I use 5w30 in all my cars all year around. But in bigger motors 10w30 is better in high temps. The owners manual says to use 5w30 or 10w30 depending on what kind of temperatures you live in. Right now your better off with 5w30, but using it once wont harm anything.
