  • header vs steering column

I just finished the driver's side installation of my SLP shorties. There's a black plastic cover that goes over the steering column near the firewall that's close to the header; it's gonna burn for sure. Is it ok to leave the plastic cover off; is there a bearing on the shaft or anything else that should be covered? I've attached a photo. Thanks

You will need to remove the rag joint cover. It will surely melt. Beneath the cover is a fabric/rubber joint coupler that connects the upper and lower steering shafts. In the event of severe impact, the joint is designed to seperate so that the parts don't form a solid shaft and travel though the passenger compartment as a solid shaft. Eventually your headers will cook this rag joint and it will loosen up and cause a certain amount of slop in the steering. When that happens, replace the rag joint with this:

    Rag Joint Eliminator (1993-1997)

Eliminates the factory rubber-fiber rag joint which can degrade and introduce steering slop. This is especially true on cars with the additional heat generated by headers. The kit includes a CNC machined coupler made from 6061-T6 aluminum which is then anodized black for corrosion resistance, and four grade 8 fasteners. A set of detailed installation instructions is also included. Cost $32

    hope this helps.
