  • Buying a new Muffler, need suggestions please...

Hey guys, I have a Flowmaster 80-Series muffler on my 1995 Z28 and I've had it for about a year and a half to two years now. Well, lately I've been hearing this loud, awful rattling noise coming from it when I drive so I took it to the local muffler shop that had originally installed my cat-back exhaust. It turns out one of those bracket things or whatever they are (can't think of the name of them) thats inside of the muffler is broken and causes the rattling. Flowmaster mufflers are only under warranty for a year so my warranty is up and I'm gonna have to buy a new muffler. I don't want to get a whole new cat-back system because I already have the 3" intermediate pipe and all so all I need is a muffler. I really loved the deep aggressive tone that the Flowmaster 80-series had but I want something more reliable, this one gave out too soon. What other company makes a muffler thats durable and carries a loud and aggressive tone? Borla? SLP?

I've got a Borla on my car and love it!! It comes with adjustable plates that allows you to change the sound of the exhaust. I've had the Borla on my car for 3yrs now and never had a problem. The SLP Loudmouth is good as well. I've heard it and it is LOUD!! Can't go wrong with either exhaust systems. Good luck!!

If you just want a muffler I suggest Hooker or Spintech. Both sound great at any RPM and perfect at WOT. I found Spintech was louder and deeper but not by much.

I had a Spintech muffler on my 97 WS6 and got lots of compliments on how it sounded. It was not raspy, just a good deep crisp note.

I have a Thrush CVX on my T/A. Low rumbly growl and can be loud once the throttle is opened up. Might be worth looking at if you don't want to wake up the neighbors.

The borla would require an entire catback. The intermediate pipe is split at the end so one set of exits are unmuffled.

Borla might make a simple 3" muffler that could be fit to your current pipe though.

Actually Tracy, Borla does make a cross-flow muffler for the F-body...its sold in their tail section kit. Not sure as to whether they sell it individually though. As far as the SLP cross-flow muffler, I've heard bad things as to the sound...reviews said it was about the same as stock. The Loudmouth on the other hand is just as the name implies...LOUD!! But, that would require a whole new system. My suggestion would be to check with your muffler shop and see who they recommend besides Flowmaster. I had a Magnaflow (I believe) put on my Jeep and it makes that AMC 360 sound very, very nice. Good luck man.
