  • Wisconsin emissions laws

I may take a job in Milwaukee when I graduate this spring... which means I would be relocating there permanently.

Right now, living in Michigan, there are no emissions inspections whatsoever, so I have removed my catalytic converters.

Are there inspections mandated by the state of Wisconsin? What about for the Milwaukee area specifically? -- I know in some states it varies by county.

One more thing... it wouldn't be too bad to live near Chicago - kinda right in the middle of the two cities, is Kenosha a nice place?

My cousin is a Kenosha cop. I've heard the place is a hole. It cannot be that bad, though. Take a drive and check it out.

I live in Madison. NO emissions enforcement here at all. Milwaukee may have some local requirements, but I'm not sure. If you lived in Kenosha I'm sure you'd be fine.

Call the cop shop. Ask for Ken Krenz.

The 5 county area around Milwaukee used to do emissions testing, that included Racine and Kenosha also. But that will be the least of your expenses......

I lived in Milwaukee County, Milwaukee, Glendale, and Bayside for 11 years. Its REALLY expensive!

First, its on the left side of the lake, and gets cold! Like below zero for days at a time, heat ain't cheap!

Silly laws, like you need to purchase a monthly permit from the police department to park on the street overnite, plus even-odd side of the street parking. I actually was arrested one morning for parking tickets......mug shots and fingerprints!

Taxes! Wow do they ever tax you! I had a 120k house that had real estate taxes that went from 1800/year up to $6,000 in 5 years, but the value of the home didn't increase over that period.

Income tax, a variable rate, but mine went up to 11% in 1984, plus the federal stuff.

I couldn't afford to live there after that, so we moved in 1985 to Florida. Big industry left or closed about then also. It is pretty countryside, and Milwaukee does keep the streets clean.

Does that mean they no longer do?

Not too heavily concerned about that. I don't have anyone else to support but myself.

You are correct about heat being expensive. Hopefully I can get an apartment that is well insulated. I will gladly trade all the snow that we get as lake effect for a little colder temperatures. The constant threatening gray sky that looms over Michigan for the entire month of Januray gets really depressing.

I am pretty sure I will be in some sort of apartment complex, so I am not too worried.

What is up with Minnesota and Wisconsin taxing people out of their ears?

... and Milwaukee does keep the streets clean.
Good to know... how is the night life in Milwaukee???

Milwaukee has a number of big time schools: Marquette University, University of Wisconsin-Milw. Milwaukee School of Engineering....etc.

The area has a population of 2 mil., so there's plenty of party places, and the beer is fresh.

Big time taxes cause its very VERY Liberal/Democrates who want everything done by government.

Obviously Holland gets a bunch of snow, but really its COLD there!

I left Milwaukee in 1985, and I just left Kazoo for the sunny south, so never more northern stuff.......

                Hey Jay,

I live west of Milwaukee about 20 minutes. They have emissions test every 2 years - not sure about testing in Kenosha. The other guy is right - Kenosha is a hole, as is Racine. The further away from Chicago, the better. Email me privately about apartments & emissions if you are interested - I can help.
