    Hey everyone, I just bought a 95' Trans Am so I thought this would be a great site to learn from the people who know first hand. I was wondering instead of having the one big muffler, go with two, one for each pipe. Will that be any better than justing having the one? Thanks.

    Welcome doc, are you really a doctor? Give us some more details on your exhaust setup if you could. If it is the stock exhaust, welding in two mufflers instead of the intended "1" would be throwing money away IMO. If you are interested in a minor performance gain and a little meaner sound go with a good "Cat Back" aftermarket system. There are many out there to choose from. Many in here like the SLP Loudmouth.

      DOC24? Maybe he's been in the Dept. Of Corrections for 24 years? I know they have cable tv there, are they passing out T/As now to? Is that with good behavior?

          Appears what you are asking about is the change to "true duals"... a complete dual exhaust system from each bank of the engine, with each side having its own muffler. Very difficult to do on a 4th Gen F-Body, due to the limited space for getting the second pipe over the rear axle.

          You may be aware your stock system starts as two exhaust manifold, which combine into a Y-pipe, then into a single outlet, with a single catalytic convertor on it (unless your 95 is an A4 - auto transmission - car that was originally sold in CA, in which case it has a cat in each branch of the Y-pipe). From the single cat, there is a single 2-3/4" "intermediate pipe" that goes back, over the rear axle, and into the passenger side of a "cross-flow" muffler, with an outlet on each side.

          The upgrade for a majority of the people is to simply enlarge everything from the cat, on back (hence the name "cat-back exhaust"). A mandrell bent 3" intermediate pipe replaces the crimp-bent stock piece, and a variety of single mufflers are offered. The "King of the Hill" in this respect is the Mufflex 4" Cat-Back, using a 4" intermediate pipe and a single Flowmaster 4" in, single 4" out muffler. I ran one of these on my 800HP setup, and a friend of mine used one on his low 9-second 1,125HP 30th SS convertible. So, there is little downside to the single muffler, if you make the system big enough.

          There are some people who have made the switch to "true duals" though. The first step would be a good set of headers. A design without a Y-pipe would be the best bet.... the Hooker "long tubes" or something like I have, which is a set of AS&M mid-length headers with modified collectors. From there, a 2-1/2" or 3" pipe can be run on each side of the car, looped over the axle (the drivers side is near impossible, but can be fit by modifying the panhard rod brace), with individual mufflers located somewhere in each branch.

          An alternative would be to simply run the exhaust pipes as far back as in front of the rear axle, and dump under the car in 90-deg turndowns.

          Whatever you use, a"true dual" setup will almost certainly have to be custom built, since no one that I am aware of sells a "ready-made" set, because of the severe space limitations. Besides the problem in getting the pipes over the axle, there is really not much clear space available on the drivers side of the car, and whatever you put there may end up as a hazard over speed-bumps.

                  Seriously though, it may not be so bad in a 6-speed, but the loudmouth is just what it says....loud.

                    I bought the car new in 1994, and did the first mod on it 3 weeks after I bought it.... the Honker CAI was quickly followed by a Borla "rear section" (not the adjustable catback)..... mistake #1. The Borla acted like a "cork"!! Then I added a set of JBA headers.... mistake #2. Good thing "we learn from our mistakes"

                    I lived with the JBA/Borla setup for several years. When I did the stroker in 2000, I picked up the AS&M's used from a friend for $175. I had Mufflex (20 miles from my house) build me a 3" Y-pipe with dual 3" CarSound cats, flanged to drop out and allow me to insert the Borla XR-1 shorties for the track... the car was still street driven, and actually set up to pass rolling emissions in NJ. Mufflex also installed their 4" catback at the same time.

                    When I had the Gear Vendors O/D added to the TH400, the custom Y-pipe no longer fit. So I cut the 4" catback off the car (saved 44# ) and ran without the Y-pipe.... just the Borlas hanging on the header collectors.... then pick up at the story above... 3" pipes, etc.

                    With just the Borlas hanging on the collectors, everything inside the car would rattle like crazy, at anything above an idle. At 2,500rpm, my chest would start to throb.... so the 3" exhaust pipes were not really a bad addition....
